The Elderberries by Corey Pandolph and Phil Frank and Joe Troise for April 10, 2021
Transcript:
Dusty: This is a great idea - getting out of Elderpark for a dinner in town! Evelyn: The food's served family-style, so what would you like to share? Dusty: No shellfish. I break out in hives. Boone: I'm on a low-carb diet. No pasta. The Professor: My doctor says no red meat for me. Woman: I'm on a vegan diet right now. Waiter: Would you care to order now? Evelyn: The bread and water were delicious! The check, please.
Family style, in my mind, includes a number of different dishes, and each person helps themselves. The comic unfortunately illustrates politeness gone crazy. Person 1 can’t each “A”, so no one gets any; person 2 can’t eat “B”, so no one gets any; and so on. I remember being really bugged about an early episode of “The Wonder Years” where the family had the allergic kid over for dinner: since he was allergic to pretty much everything, the only thing that anyone got for dinner was crackers or something like that. We should respect and reasonably accommodate someone’s dietary limitations, but it shouldn’t completely restrict everyone else.
