I’m not happy being put in the middle of two great comic strips, both of which brighten my life far more reliably than most of the 150 or so strips I read every day. (Who needs Prozac when you have online comic services?)
It does sound rather sour-grapes-ish on Pab’s part if not downright envious. (I’d like to think this strip is motivated entirely for the gag.)
But on the other hand, one of the more bizarre items in my extensive collection of comic character merchandising is a box of Compound-W “One Step Wart Remover for Kids” with a picture of Garfield saying “Makes wart removal fun!” That’s going too far.
The merchandising is getting a bit Odie-us. But then Vicky got a whole era/age named after her, as well as a style of decorating and a period of literature…
getting artwork from the public domain, and making it work as a comic strip using historical personages, are two completely different things. A 3-year-old can do the first one… most professional cartoonists wouldn’t even TRY to do what Pab does every day. Quod erat demonstrandum…

I have a few of Davis’ staff at “Paws Inc.” that have let me know they read TNAOQV every day, although I don’t think any of them has ever shown my stuff to their boss, so I have no reason to think he hates me. Nor do I hate him, although I think the strip has seen better days. (The first few years were pure genius.)
Garfield is an easy target some times.
The day they do a spin-off from “Cathy,” however, I will need a new credenza.
