I’m kind of bummed to lose Tennant, but, as I was unsure about the change when he started, I’m sure the new guy will work out just fine. I’m also looking forward to seeing what they’ll do with the weeping angels.
Not having BBC America, I can only wait for the DVD release. But I am curious. As for how good the New Doctor will be, if the writing of the last two years of DW are any indication, we’ll be in for a fun ride.
The “New Doctor Who” series has been truly impressive. Took the best of the old series, and matured it and added continuity.
And Gweedo, apparently some of the Time Lords have been ambiguously moral for some time. See, for example, The Five Doctors.
New episodes hit the Internet within an hour of the BBC broadcast ending, if you know where to look. Not that I would of course. The new trailer looks promising and Moffat did some of the best episodes of the past few seasons.
Matt Smith looks like a teen idol. I have a bad feeling about his tenure, but we shall see. (Did you know Bill Nighy really wanted the part? Now, he would have been a Doctor! And, I am still holding out for Hugh Laurie finishing his run as House and taking on the role…)
In any case, although I have some reservations about it, the final episodes (they were actually two specials) had brilliant moments. The Master has always been my favourite villain, and the whole world full of him was very cool. Timothy Dalton (!) as the leader of the Time Lords was magnificent. And, I, for one, really loved the final sequence.
Pab: Didn Victoria not create Torchwood specifically to fight against aliens like the Doctor? While I like the sentiment expressed in the cartoon, it seems to go against Who canon.
@Cean, @LibrarianInTraining - If you haven’t figured it out yet from the other comics, the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who just introduced a new “Doctor Who”, Matt Smith. The old Doctor Who was David Tennant, and his last day as Doctor Who was New Year’s Day. The process of introducing a new Doctor Who is referred to as regeneration.
I watch the BBC channel (among my many other digitals) but have not watched Dr Who for well over 15 years. I watch most evening shows after they air, so I had the pleasure of the Vienna Symphony last night (on PBS).
There’s always a period of morning when we lose a Doctor,
but we gain a Doctor.
Victoria’s paying tribute to a worthy adversary. She established Torchwood specifically to fight the Doctor, they investigate strange phenomena because he’s often found around such. So where were they during UNIT’s heyday?
Burgundy2, Tom Baker has always been THE Doctor to me, though I thought Elisabeth Sladen was a good sidekick, too. When I was young, WOR broadcast the Tom Baker episodes from his regeneration through the departure of Leela over and over again–not that I complained, but that means I’ve seen every Tom Baker/Elisabeth Sladen/Louise Jameson episode at least three times…I did really like David Tennant, though. As I get older, the Doctor seems to be getting younger. Maybe that’s just me getting older.
I would like very much for Matt Smith to do well, but after seeing him in that finale and the preview, & noticing how very much he looks like Macaulay Culkin in “Home Alone,” (especially in the scenes where his eyes are wide open & his mouth is in a 0 shape), I have a sense of foreboding. And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, let his catchphrase not be “Geronimo!”
Also, that new companion may be 21, but she looks about 12. I hope they are not making this into a teen oriented show.
Susan001 you have not yet said whether you are also Susansunshine on Comics.com. As I have declared, I use my email name on most sites unless they have other regulations and I like to identify people who I consider “semi-friends” with whom I have shared points of view. My actual email friends are mostly cousins and former coworkers ans well as current local friends. I spent most of today outdoors at a “war practice” with many friends. I may only watch Dr Who if it becomes so popular that friends are commenting on it. __On the other hand, a few people today also commented on SyFy’s Alice and were interested in the annotated version that I’m currently reading. I was clued to it by a forner co-worker who was Russian. (Alice was linked to Lolita in the early days of literature). The comments are a very easy read, but I have many assignments of Illumination and Calligraphy to finish- so any reading will take 2nd place. I should open a new album in my Webshots to show my SCA art work, or just the scrolls and the covers of Kingdom publication (which are BW). I don’t update my albums nearly often enough.
To answer the question of when the Time Lords became evil, they became evil when Dr. Who restarted and all the Time Lords were ‘Dead’. Bit by bit, season by season there has been a bit more, and the actual meat of it was in the concluding episodes of Tennet’s tenure. While fighting the Daleks the Time Lords were so single-minded they BECAME what they fought. They couldn’t win, so they were going to destroy the entire Universe, but the Doctor managed to send both civilizations into thosetimey-wimey pigon holey time bubble stasis dohickies The Daleks got out over several seasons….but the Time Lords were more methodical and utilized their Damage to the Master to break out of the bubble and try to destroy the universe again. And again, Dr Who—or the Master–or both–managed to break the link and yank them back into the pocket.
By the way, Pab, I love it. I also note the Queen only references the 10th Doctor, implying she approves of this Doctor after seeing what he did for her Future England. (Tom Baker running all over England in a jeep would definitely not amuse Her Majesty) Oh, and don’t forget, there’s a touch of werewolf in the royal line :-)
I will truly miss David as the Dr. but am more than willing to give Matt a chance. However, I agree: Please don’t make ‘Geronimo’ the new catch phrase.
Well, I’d be more amused if Smith’s replacement was a girl. However, that would be on their last re-generation too…13th Doctor luming behind everyone else….where it all ends …. permenantly.
Until they screwup by re-starting the series again! :)
@Quaby: I think you’ll find it was Jon Pertwee, Baker’s immediate predecessor, who “ran around England” in “Bessie,” which was not a Jeep, but a Siva/Neville Trickett roadster that her Maj would surely appreciate.
After this first season with Matt Smith I still miss David Tennant. I do like the current companion (Amy) and Stephen Moffatt as producer. I’m hoping next season is better.

It was great, glorious, sad, and not little bit maudlin. And I’m still not sure about Matt Smith. He looks like a gimboid.

Cean, me either. I have a feeling it has something to do with television, but since I rarely watch it, it wouldn’t know anyway.
