In fact, this reflects a problem with the way we approach the issue of endangered species. Most of the species that are endangered are not “cute,” but they’re essential to the ecosystem. But most of our attention goes to the cute or more dramatic species. I mean, who wants to worry about saving a slug or an insect? Often, the big value of saving the pretty animals is that it leads to ecosystem preservation that protects not only them, but other species as well (including us!).
