Things were SO much simpler back then – they would have just burned him at the stake. Or, if already famous, forced him to recant, and put him under house arrest.

You can be nonreligious and still be anti-science like Bill Maher.

It only took 376 years for the church to formally admit that it was wrong about Galileo. The Earth may still be habitable by the time some admit they’re wrong about pollution. Regardless of climate, it’s bad to foul the air, water & soil.

Actually, Galileo’s real experiment involved rolling different weights down an inclined plane. The Tower of Pisa thing is a myth.

actually they fell/rolled at different speeds due to atmospheric drag, but his instruments were not sufficiently accurate to detect the difference.

@Balto Bill:Jim Inhofe is, of course, a big fan of the oil industry, so many times we don’t know if he’s actually stupid or being paid to say stupid things. Probably doesn’t really matter either way. Can’t actually click “reply” to your comment – maybe because the entire comment is a link (albeit a great one)?

Correct; and it is fueled largely by religion. Dr Coyne on his blog, Why Evolution is True, deals with it often. A good closely related book is Chris Mooney’s The Republican War on Science.
