There is one site I have to access at work that has very strict password rules, and it has to follow ALL of them! Some of the rules are: must be no more or less than 8 characters; numbers and letters; no symbols; no double digit/letters; no obvious dates; can’t be any of the last 13 used passwords. It also has to be changed about every 3 months.

Last fall, DFAS (the Defense Finance and Accounting Service) determined that the ‘myPay’ website (where military retirees go to look up their pensions, allotments and tax forms, and usually access 1-2 times per year) must follow DoD password protocol. Please note the word ‘retirees’. This protocol dictates the following:

’myPay passwords expire every 60 days.

    Your password must:

    - be 15 to 30 characters long- contain at least two uppercase letters (A-Z)- contain at least two lowercase letters (a-z)- contain at least two numbers (0-9)- contain at least two of the following special characters: # @ $ % ^ ! * + = _- change at least four characters from your previous password

    Your password cannot:

    - contain spaces- be one of your last ten previous passwords’

DFAS caveats this with the following statement:

‘myPay, like all DFAS systems, is a part of the DoD network and must follow DoD’s cyber security requirements. While the new password rules can be a challenge, there is the bonus that your personal and pay information now has greater protection from potential unwelcome intruders.’

Please note that they do NOT apologize for your inconvenience. :-(

This reminds me of the time I was standing post during Desert Storm. A captain wanted into the camp but didn’t know the password. I ticked him off pretty good by not letting him in.
