My favorite callers are “invalid number “ and “000-000-0000”. Also occasionally get a call from my own number. Answered it once, but I wasn’t on the other end.
Phone companies could help homeowners if they allowed home phones to have ring tones for accepted numbers like those on cell phones. When my ‘pocket’ rings any other tone than for family, I just don’t bother to look at it, that is, unless I’m indoors at a restaurant or similar setting where the noise would disturb others. But it’s generally much easier to use the tones.
Of course, most cell phone users almost never have their phones anywhere but in front of their noses, so they can’t avoid having to take some action.

My problem is when you get a menu choice for your problem. It doesn’t cover your problem. Then where do you go???

It rings during dinner but it doesn’t get answered unless one recognizes the number. Lots less answering going on than calling

The second law of Archimedes: When a body is lowered into water, the telephone rings.

Phone companies could stop this if they wanted to. The problem is, all these scammers are paying the phone company for the calls.
