Had the owner of the small company where I worked tell me that he was reducing everyone’s pay by 10%. This was right after he had called us out into the parking lot to see two new identical BMWs that he had purchased – one for him, and one for his high school age son (who didn’t work). Worse, I was not a manager but he wanted me to spread the bad news because all of the managers refused.
I told a few people, and soon it had spread. Everybody was upset. So the owner told people that he “might” restore salaries to their previous levels if profits were up next year. That didn’t go over well, either. So then he claimed he never said any of this, and that I made it all up. Even the part where he directly told people about maybe restoring salaries.
I was more trusted than then owner, and some managers admitted what happened, so everybody continued to be mad at him. We had a mass exodus out the door, and he ended up selling our location to a competitor for peanuts.
