I think there actually was a use for it in the 19th century, to the point that poor people in London gathered it up for sale. Maybe tanning leather? Too lazy to look up.

Dr. Steyn didn’t make a good first impression on Ms. Thompson in The Gods Must Be Crazy when he mentioned that his life’s work was collecting dung. (An extremely funny movie, if memory serves, and genuinely well-intentioned, but amazingly naive about the grim realities of South Africa’s apartheid institutions.)
