Sludge Pilaf is probably what the kids get now days but when I was in school my grandmother worked as a cafeteria lady and we had the best lunches you ever tasted. Especially the hot rolls and fried chicken, can you imagine that in any school today…….not happening.
I attended a former State Teacher College, just recently recreated as a liberal arts school back in the early 60s. Carved into the woodwork of my dorm was, “THOSE WHO CANNOT DO, TEACH…THOSE WHO CANNOT TEACH, TEACH TEACHERS.”
I always hated that saying. Teachers in fact CAN do a lot and well. They teach out of a sense of purpose, of responsibility for the future of the society, and because it’s a rush watching kids “get it.” Many teachers willingly give up opportunities to earn much more money because they have a calling to teach.
can still picture Hazel, with her lit cigarette hovering over my tray as she rang up my lunch on the old fashioned mechanical cash register… and hoping she wouldn’t ash into my chicken soup!

Both quotes are riffs on the original from Plato: “Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach.”
