Ernie doesn’t like the curtain because it reminds him of his prison time. Lot of prisons used to have arrows drawn on the floor. Inmates must walk by the direction of arrows only with hands in pockets. Failure to do so is an infraction and can get you tossed into the hole for 7 days or more.
There was a long period during which “guests” at His Majesty’s prisons wore uniforms with arrows (the King’s Broad Arrow) on them to identify them as convicts. My understanding is the practice was discontinued in the 1920s, yet has lived on as a comedy meme since.

the question is, why would you waste your time (or how do you trust his taste in the first place)

Must be a pretty nice prison to have curtains.
Buckeye67 over 1 year ago
Flo should just have the police hang the curtains in Andy’s favorite cell at the jail.

The question is, do the curtains match the blue blob hanging over the couch?

The arrow prison uniform is probably the British equivalent of the black and white striped prison uniform seen in American comedies.

If I had a very strong opinion I’d give it. Otherwise my usual thought was “it’s your cave”.
