“When television is good, nothing — not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers — nothing is better. But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there for a day without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland.” — Newton Minow, 1961
My favorite line in that movie is when the cast of “Romeo and Juliet” is at a tavern, and a wench asks the actor who plays the nurse “What’s it about?” “Well,” he says, “There’s this nurse…”
One of my favorite movie is one that I am guessing none of you has seen. “They All Laughed” It stars Dorothy Stratten, John Ritter, Ben Gazzara and Audrey Hepburn. I love it because I love movies in which NYC itself is a character and it has a good story and characters. Not sure if it was ever released to theaters due to Stratten’s death and it no longer even appears on TV – there is a poster on the wall for it in an episode of “WKRP”.
My all time favorite movie and favorite Christmas movie is “Lion in Winter”, original version with Katherine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole. We had it on Beta 2 tapes were needed for it), VHS and now DVD. We watch while we put our Christmas tree every year. Since that process has gotten longer we also have the version of it for Hallmark staring Patrick Stewart and Glen Close.

If by ‘recent’, you mean ‘movies less than 25 years old’, I guess that barely counts, Arlo.

If one eliminates zombies, vampires, ridiculous cartoon heroes and car chases, there’s little left to choose.

I am going to have to start drawing the curtains in my home. This is way too close to the mark… Mr Johnson has been eavesdropping. Great strip!

James Bond films fit those criteria. Just because Hollywood hasn’t made anything of that caliber in years doesn’t mean the old films are bad.

Mrs. Baker complains that our Blu-Ray and DVD collection is mostly war movies and sci-fi. She’s right.
