âWhen television is good, nothing â not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers â nothing is better. But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there for a day without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland.â â Newton Minow, 1961
My favorite line in that movie is when the cast of âRomeo and Julietâ is at a tavern, and a wench asks the actor who plays the nurse âWhatâs it about?â âWell,â he says, âThereâs this nurseâŠâ
One of my favorite movie is one that I am guessing none of you has seen. âThey All Laughedâ It stars Dorothy Stratten, John Ritter, Ben Gazzara and Audrey Hepburn. I love it because I love movies in which NYC itself is a character and it has a good story and characters. Not sure if it was ever released to theaters due to Strattenâs death and it no longer even appears on TV â there is a poster on the wall for it in an episode of âWKRPâ.
My all time favorite movie and favorite Christmas movie is âLion in Winterâ, original version with Katherine Hepburn and Peter OâToole. We had it on Beta 2 tapes were needed for it), VHS and now DVD. We watch while we put our Christmas tree every year. Since that process has gotten longer we also have the version of it for Hallmark staring Patrick Stewart and Glen Close.

If by ârecentâ, you mean âmovies less than 25 years oldâ, I guess that barely counts, Arlo.

If one eliminates zombies, vampires, ridiculous cartoon heroes and car chases, thereâs little left to choose.

James Bond films fit those criteria. Just because Hollywood hasnât made anything of that caliber in years doesnât mean the old films are bad.
