Gracie: My name is Gracie... Nora: And I'm Nora. Doutzen: I'm Doutzen. Nora: Doutzen? Nora: She needs a more American name. Nora: Can we call you Takeela?
Yeeeahhh… I still don’t get why a new girl’s turning up in a stereotypical national costume that (just like every other national costume) just about no-one has worn for a century or more? Especially given the poke at “stereotypes” yesterday?
My brother spent a year in Gambia, West Africa teaching English. His Mandinka host family said his name, Kevin, was unpronounceable. He was called Kemo Baji while he was there.
If a Dutch person saw this she/he would think this was the stupidest cartoon. It’s like if they had a comic of an American in a Dutch school, he/she would be a cowboy! Or in Gracie’s case, poncho and sombrero as Timetravler pointed out! And no comment on Nora!
@ Time Traveler, Petemejiea & Night-Gaunt49 – I agree with all of your comments. Indeed if the tables were turned there would be hard feelings. I’m of Italian heritage and if this were done with an Italian stereotype I would be more that a little upset.
I would have thought that a minority based strip would be more sensitive regarding stereotypes. Why indeed is not Gracie portrayed wearing a poncho and sombrero?
Retired Dude: Just three brothers. Taking her father’s advice to buy land whenever possible and never sell it, she became quite wealthy and her philanthropy was responsible much of what is valuable in Houston.
Nice generalization there, NG49. I guess you don’t follow professional sports in the US, especially the NBA (or for that matter, the occasional soccer league that tries to pop up for a few years or so). You get used to all kinds of foreign names in pro sports. Ever heard of Yasiel Puig, for example?

I don’t see the point of all this. I think it’s being clumsily handled.

Why isn’t Gracie wearing her sombrero and poncho to school?
QuietStorm27 about 10 years ago
You’re stepping into dangerous territory, very stereotypical all around. Maybe they can call her DZ and introduce her to American clothes.

I’m afraid not.

Best name ever was the daughter of Texas governor Jim Hogg. He named his daughter Ima. There is no truth to the rumor that Ima’s sister was named Ura.

No….they can’t call her ‘Takeela.’ They need to use her real name; Doutzen. Anything else would be offensive….
hippogriff about 10 years ago
K M: And you never will. Ima was named for a character in a novel and always firmly denied there was anything unusual about it.
