Cooking is art, baking is science. And recipes (for cooking) should be taken as suggestions you can vary according to personal taste (and ingredients on hand).
There was a Dick vanDyke episode on this subject. Laura’s best friend Millie asks for the recipe of Laura’s signature hors d’oeuve. She finally gives it.Night of the party:Millie: I don’t know, Laura, it just isn’t as good as yours.Laura:Rob: You left out the pickles.Millie: !
I asked my mom a couple of years ago for the “secret family Passover recipes” as husband (not Jewish) and I (am Jewish) were having dinner by ourselves (had bedbugs – no longer go to anyone’s house). She mailed them to me – they are copied off of the packages of the Kosher for Passover foods!

I had a friend who whenever you asked for a recipe, she would leave out a key ingredient, so it was never quite as good as hers.

My mother made things and even though I have the recipes, I can’t make them the same.

Perhaps, but it leaves a lot of room for improvisation…

I’m guessing one ingredient is always included and doesn’t have to be stated. Love!

The recipe I’m most sorry about not getting was my Grandmother’s Oatmeal Cookie recipe.
Not that she was Secretive about it.
She just died before it ever occurred to me to Ask for it.
