This reminds me of my 5th grade teacher who told us that December 21 was the shortest day of the year but didn’t explain what she meant. I was seriously confused because she had already taught us that every day had 24 hours. She didn’t bother explaining. But that teacher made a lot of other mistakes, too.
I happen to think standard time is a waste of time. I’m for having some extra daylight to work with when I get home. It’s always dark when I go into work, whether DST or standard time, so save me that extra daylight for when I get home.
Dec. 21 has the fewest daylight hours – in the western hemisphere – and June 21, has the most. Thus, today is the shortest “day” and longest “night”..HOWEVER … in Australia – Perth for example – today, they will have nearly 12 full hours of sun (like we did on June 21, in Toronto, Canada.)
I love the Winter Solstice! It’s my New Years , the days will begin to get longer. With in a few weeks I will see buds swell just a tiny bit on some of the hardier plants. It will still get colder but there is the promise of light and rebirth. Light a candle and sip a good dark ale. This year, Dec. 21st 2011 9:32 PST.
