According to my Irish grandfather, the Irish invented the bagpipes, and gave it to the Scottish invaders in the 13th Century – and the Scots still haven’t realised they were tricked.
“I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made sound never equalled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig.” (Alfred Hitchcock)
The man who brought the bagpipes to Scotland was an Italian named Giuseppe Aroni… He spent his time in the Scottish countryside and liked it so much that he changed his name to McAroni…
Bagpipes are AWESOME. There is a gentleman at our church who plays once a year, dressed in full regalia (including – and I don’t remember the actual word for it – the little dagger in the sock). Even our daughters look forward when it’s announced that Mr. D is playing!
Bagpipes can bring tears to my eyes – the good kind. But I still got a good laugh from today’s strip. I suppose it’s like most musical instruments; played well, they can be wonderful. Played badly, they can be painful.
I LOVE bagpipe music! One time one of our neighbors played her music so loud that it drove everyone crazy! Our BBQ was right by her bedroom window. (Where she played her music. She was young person renting the room.). I banged on the BBQ with my broom handle making a huge racket, after not being able to get her attention any other way. She said, “What?” I told her to turn down her music! She said she liked it that way! I said “Well, I like Scottish bagpipe music. And I have a CD! I’ll PLAY it LOUDLY if you don’t stop!” She stopped.
I actually enjoy listening to the sounds of bagpipes. In regards to the comments regarding alcohol and bagpipes, I find a good scotch whisky goes well with the bagpipe music… a lot of scotch whisky…
Fountains can be tricky to carry, when out for a jog, bike ride, or even a stroll..Regarding yesterday’s strip, I always appreciate your thoughtful insight, and once again, almost spilled my coffee…
I like bagpipe music (and slide steel guitar) just found a great bagpipe group “Red Hot Chili Pipers” Just one CD now. One of the track is “We Will Rock You/Eye of Tiger/The Clumsy Lover” Hope they do more
Love the pipes. – Last hockey season some neighbours of our arena complained to city hall about the piper busking after the hockey games. The social media onslaught to city hall to support the bagpiper was huge!
Love the pipes! Love them played outside or in a very large indoor. Any other indoor is insane and the piper probably isn’t worth listening to. Try Clanadonia or Saor Patrol for great pipes and drums.

Apparently the authors think their fan base is far too broad, and are trying to drastically narrow it.

I thought that the tradition of playing the bag pipes during battle was to terrorize the enemy.

I’d like to see someone play “Flight of the Bumblebee” on bagpipe.

And on a personal note….both my father and my older brother were “piped out”. I love the sound and was glad to share it as a last memory of them.
