Now invent the brake, before someone else invents the lawsuit.

And so begins the vehicular assault on trees that has endured through the ages. And in almost every case, the tree wins.

To quote a cartoon theme song from my youth, “Watch out for that tree!”.

What did he grease..the wheel or the axle? If he greased the axle it would only increase the speed if he was riding it and the bottom of his feet would be greased also and ,probably, into the same tree!

Back around 1910 or so, my stepfather who was about 10 decided to grease the trolly tracks of the trolley that come down the hill and turned at the bottom at his father’s store. Yep, trolley derailed. Miracle my step-father is alive after that stunt!

Henry Ford stubbornly held on to the mechanical brake design until 1940, long after most all cars had hydraulic brakes. My father in law had a 1937 Ford back in the day, he always said “you could get the car to 70 mph but you couldn’t stop it”.
