If he did call the company about the bill, and it had just arrived when the dog ate it… it must have been late getting to him as well, so how could he have paid it sooner?
Past several years I have been paying several of our bills before we get them – write the check amount and send it with a cover letter. (We don’t do anything financial online so I call the companies to find out how much we owe if they are not fixed monthly amounts.)
Why have I been doing this? Well, the mail still seems to move a bit slowly and I don’t want my payments to be made late so I mail them at least a week in advance of when they are due – even though several of the bills we receive arrive less than a week before they are due! I just write a cover letter with all of the needed info, write the check, scan the letter and the check (I scan all payments – check and what is sent with it even if paid with what they send to include with the payment) . This way I can easily check that the check was correct etc.
(I am an accountant – paying bills, doing tax returns, etc are actually FUN to me.)

Max was only responding to an attack by an aggressive piece of mail.

How can your payment be late when you just got the envelope? If it had been a second notice, then it’s your fault!

I’d suggest sending a picture but I don’t know how to do that on a land line.
