I’ve deliberately put down my book (The Secret Commonwealth, Philip Pullman) to check my emails catch up with Facebook and read the comics because I’m getting near the end and I don’t want to finish it too soon!
Books tend to be much better than the offerings on television or in movies. Even when the story is true to the book (For example, “The Hunt fort Red October” and the latest version of “The Lord of the RIngs” trilogy.) much is left out just for the reason of limited length of time for a movie. This does not include the deliberate changes using a book title. The only thing that the movie “Blade Runner” had in common with the book was the title. The book was actually a foretelling of the problems of nationalized health coverage. And the plot line was lifted from yet another book. “Starship Troopers” removed the true star of the book, the power armor, in order to show the pretty faces of the stars. In addition, other changes were made that made the movie a travesty of the original written work.
That’s what I’ve always loved about reading – the descriptions come alive, and it’s like watching a movie (soundtrack and all) when I read.
Not everyone gets that experience when they read. I blame it on my overactive imagination (and being socially awkward). But I love it – books make more sense to me than people any day, and the characters in books often become my friends.
Writing is the consummate achievement of mankind; the ability to store extra-somatic knowledge. A book is simply magic. It can take you into the minds of those living and dead; it can take you into the far future or the distant past. Into deeper reality or the furthest reaches of imagination; it can illuminate and/or teach the most difficult technical information. And most of all, its abilities do not disappear if electricity fails…

That’s what reading is supposed to be!

Okay, this is starting to get downright condescending.

It’s so much more satisfying to read than to watch TV

When watching TV you get an urge to change channels, and reading some comics I get the same urge.

“Words become pictures” is a bit ironic from a cartoonist.

I like it. Reading good writing (any genre) is a thing of beauty.

We lost something vital when TV became the norm.

Couldn’t agree more. Reading books is fine as long as you participate in real life, otherwise its no different from watching porn.

Next thing you know they’ll be listening to Dimension-X and The Whistler on the wireless.

Reading brings you to worlds you never knew existed. You will never be alone if you have a good book…and a dog.
