I seem to remember the students of a university in Northern Arizona choosing the artichoke, sometime back in the 1970s. They also chose a weird school color, like pink or puce. The administration refused to let their choice stand. I wish I could find a report on the Web, but so far no luck.
Then there’s the college in my state that’s the Geoducks. That’s pronounced “gooey-ducks” and it’s a type of clam that’s so big it pours out of its shell.
We are slugs! most beautiful UC campus ,deer and wild turkeys wander the campus. and I think the slug was a local creature , and chosen as mascot. cute logo too
Ok so i rate this strip 6/10 because in the seiries nate talks to coach about this and it never works exeot for baseball, when for a whike they were the Vultures since there was no sponsor for the team that year.I think it will go on forever much like the previous arc, but more enjoyable for me.I dont like when the whole arc is just a convorsations that has already happend previously. It never goes anywhere. This strip has potential though. Only time will tell where this goes….(Omnious music intesifies)

The university is UC Santa Cruz, by the way.
Also, a slug would just be symbolic of the team. And what is so good about a slug?

I don’t think it would be a good idea for Nate to have a banana slug as P.S. 38’s mascot for two reasons.
1. UC Santa Cruz would probably sue them for stealing their mascot
2. P.S. 38 would become a laughingstock for having such a weak and crappy mascot

PS38 “Banana slugs.” Clearly he’s not thinking of what Jefferson and/or bullies can do with thank name.
