Why do you keep leaving the pencil out?

No mystery, when you are awake, the cat is entertained by you, when you are asleep and the cat gets bored, it pushes pencils. What you need to do, to keep the cat from getting bored, is set up one of those mirror balls, give the cat something to entertain himself with, while you sleep.
