If so have you observed the target squirrel not find the tossed peanut? and finally, have you ever stood by the fence or whatever and pointed to the peanut you just tossed? Have any squirrels followed your finger to their treat? In dogs, that behavior is well studied and known as triadic communication. This happened to me a few days ago when the last peanut in the bag couldn’t be found and another squirrel wanted a nut. over the next few days, some squirrels started following my finger. They already knew what someone carrying a ziplock bag meant.
