I once worked in an office where a large number of our clientele were older gentlemen. One woman in our office was insulted because one elderly gent referred to us as âgalsâ and used endearments like âhunâ in a non-threatening, older-gent way. I thought it was sweet, but that one woman was very upset and actually told him to stop (and wasnât very polite about it: âMy NAME is âMarthaâ, and I am N-O-T a âgalâ!â) I guess Iâm not too progressiveâŠand Iâm also TERRIBLE with directions!
âYou throw like a girlâ â insult to male ball players.âWhat is this, the Powder Puff league? " â insult to male football players.âGirly manâ â SNL comedic insult to male weight lifters. And you wonder why many adult women donât like to be called girls or gals? Certainly, use of the term needs to be taken in context, but as BluePumpkin said, after a certain age, calling a woman a girl can be disrespectful or mocking or both.
