Ahhh, the days before Google Translate. Now it’d say “Gorbachev sings … [FILL IN THE BLANKS]”

Just realised something. I know that the Soviet Union went through a number of leaders in quick succession at the time, but Gorbachev didn’t become the president until 1985. Why didn’t Oliver use Andropov or Chernenko or whoever it was?

Arcs like this make me stop and marvel over the changes I’ve seen during my lifetime.

Khrushchev, overheard singing in the bathtub

Oh my comrade, oh my comrade, oh my comrade Malenkov

You are lost and gone forever

    and I hope I won’t be next.

    And

See the U-ka-raine from a cattle train

It’s the only way we’ve got to get you there…

    Trans-Siberian Railway jingle, circa 1960.

A special cookie if you know where these came from.
