    The only problem with that trick is that it only works once!

    I thought it was broccoli that most people complained about (including G.H.W. Bush)….I look forward to Christmas dinner with brussels every year!

    I love brocolli, but I wouldn’t eat brussel sprouts if it were the last vegetable on Earth.

    Actually Nab is correct. Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, et al. are members of the SAME species, Brassica oleracea. That makes them cultivars of that species.

    Nice one Broomie. I think I’ll have to try that with my kid…

    All those cultivars have sulfur-bearing compounds (which is also why they generate gas when digested), but Brussels sprouts apparently have high concentrations of them.

    I would rather eat a cardboard box than brussels sprouts.

    @wuz one

    Was as flabbergasted with CULTIVAR as you.

    Entered geezerhood awhile back, and in all those years, had never heard or seen in print the word CULTIVAR.

    The stuff you learn here in the comments section. Amazing.

    Was going to thank Nab directly, but my pen ran out of ink while jotting down his username to type in. His comment is too far up the page, and my memory span sure as hell doesn’t last long enough to type in his username.

    Thanks , Nab, for this valuable addition to my vocabulary. Don’t know how often the opportunity will arise to test it out on someone,though.

    Damn right.Next time there had better be some serious green under the greens.My going rates were always as follows: Brussels sprouts-$5.Spinach-$10. Broccoli-$20.

    the kid will long remember the lie, which far outweighs the benefit of eating a veggie.

    @Rainbow FairyMight be persuaded to eat the brussels sprouts under the duress of the alternative being a cardboard box unless said box came with mozzarella cheese, ham, salami, roasted peppers,tomatoes, onions,pickles,olive oil, vinegar and salt, a dash of Ricotta cheese, mayonnaise, pepperoni,mustard, ranch dressing,marinara sauce,garlic, spinach, pineapple chunks and of course (with a nod to Zippy), taco sauce.No meal is complete without taco sauce.Would then proceed to eat the toppings and abandon the box.
