I wonder how Paul would react after putting Buckles out for the night and then finding him gone in the morning. I would if he would own that as a poor decision or blame Buckles, or even punish Buckles if he finally turned up.
Our Springer Spaniel used to sleep inside, and they still keep the Lab in too. Cats are OK outside but dogs usually sleep at night and they need to feel they are near their “pack”.
I wouldn’t put any animal out at night. I once lost a precious cat by letting her go out in the evening because she wanted to. I never saw her again…it was a really hard lesson.

Dogs should be kept in the house. Too many dangers outside. Getting hit by a car, attacked by other dogs,coyotes,skunks,porcupines,and other animals.
