Well enjoy being grumpy and bored then….It’s a lot better than getting beaten up by Moe.

I guess that’s what moms are for. Push you out of your comfort zone. When I want to relax in my room she will throw me out and when I am enjoying outdoors she will call me back. Life is tough.

dahawk: Y Indian Guides? That sounds like a great project! We have the Scouts or the Explorer Clubs around here. Does the “Y” have anything to do with the YMCA? I was a Cub Scout leader for two years and an assistant Boy Scout Leader for two years when my son was in. I can just see my kids then being crazy over that too! In the days when this comic was run before computers, video games, and cable or satellite television its hard to believe it would be that hard to get Calvin to go outside and play! You couldn’t keep me and my friends inside back when we were young!

Hobbes should throw him in the creek, and then it will be too late to worry if the water is too cold.

That’s us Calvins of the world… sometimes we just wanna gripe simply because we can.

I was thinking the same thing, bmonk, but that would give Calvin something else to gripe about.

It’s too hot out here! “Ahhh, this porridge is just right, Goldilocks said happily, and she ate it all.” This water is too cold! “Ahhh, this chair is just right, Goldilocks sighed.” This shade is too dark. “Then Goldilocks lay down in the third bed and it was just right.” Blondes really do have more fun! Oh wait… isn’t Calvin blond? Calvin must be an exception to the rule, but then, Calvin usually takes exception to the rules. Calvin is exceptional!

Before he knows it, he’ll have to work every day and all that sitting in the shade and wading in the creek will be something that he wishes he had time to do. When he isn’t at work or commuting to and from, he’ll be having to fix something in the house or cut grass or shovel all that snow he makes his snow goons out of. Snow won’t be as much fun then……

My sympathies are with Hobbes - nothing like a grumpy kid to darken your day!

Calvin actually spend a lot of time outside - especially in winter when he’s building his unique snowmen. And I believe parents have been saying, “Get outside” to kids for generations.

I read a book once (& can’t remember what it is anymore) where the main character’s father tried to get him to give up reading because all that reading was bad for a kid.

What amazes me when Friday 13th comes on certain months it’s acknowledge. But in December when Friday 13th comes not. My late dad’s BD was on Dec 13th, my hubby’s former sister-in-law hers is Dec. 13th.

i guess december is more popular coz o the 25th and the 31st eyy

I was born and raised about 200 miles from the coldest spot in the USA where I froze my butt off for 20 years.

Then I went south and lived 200 miles from the hottest spot in the USA where I sweated my butt off for the next 30 years.

Then I finally ended up in Kauai, HI where I’ve lived for 20 years……Ah, just right!

i gripe therefore i am

my mom complained because my brother and i were always outside as soon as chores were done, we were off until dinner then back outside kids today, if it doesn’t have a keyboard or a game controller, they want no part of it

Why is it that kids don’t know how good they’ve got it and only seem happy when they’re complaining?!?!?

Face it! And I know it sounds illogical but SOMETIMES IT FEELS GOOD TO FEEL BAD!

You almost never see Calvin playing happily with other kids his age. This isolating behavior bespeaks far deeper problems with this little boy…..

Dino, yes, the Y Guides was sponsored by the YMCA. The neatest thing about it was involving each dad with scouting type activities with their sons. We had monthly meeting at rotating homes and each pair brought their homemade piece of the tribe totom that would stack on each other. We all also had Indian names, Gold Eagle, Redhawk, White Owl, Bluejay, etc. and did primitive camping activities and projects.

When growing up out in the country, sometimes Mom wouldn’t see my brother and me in the summer from after breakfast and chores till suppertime. Had to wash our feet every night before bedtime as we went barefoot all summer. Got one new pair of shoes for start of school in the fall from Sears-Roebuck.

Not necessarily. As an introvert, he could simply be happier by himself. And who would he play with? Suzie? Moe?

He was in a scout troop once–but naturally he was off by himself, and got into trouble for straying. That’s when Mr. Watterson realized he was a naturally solitary kid with a tremendous imagination. Probably an INFJ.

Unhappier with Mom by extension because she made him go outside. Being mad at Mom is a sort of happiness.

Actually, Calvin is very lucky to have a creek so close to his home. Not many children have a place like that to play in.

bmonk - what in the world is an INFJ? I have no idea what this acronym means….

INFJ is one of the sixteen possible combinations of “Introvert” (or “extrovert”) and three other traits. It’s the Myers-Briggs (if I’ve got that right) system of putting people into psychological categories, usually based on a big multiple-choice test of what they prefer.

I’m wondering how come Calvin can say “darn” in three consecutive frames of a comic strip (I wrote the D-word he uses, but I expect it’ll get bleeped out in my post), but Commenters here can’t even get away with saying it once?
