Calvin seems to have mastered this quality from his dad. He’s a master of making everyone around him miserable.

My Dad started taking me camping in 1944 to the Adirondack Mountains, every year, canoeing, mountain climbing and just plain old relaxing. Wish he was still here to do it….

Calvin, I used to love to suffer like that………….

I’m a rain magnet when it comes to camping in a tent. My parents were into going to “camp” which had the same activities but much drier. Now I like the whole picnic and swim at the beach with the family activity. Since we live in the country we moreless go to camp everyday, which I love.

Try primitive camping sometime. You take, ware, and use only what your ancestors would have had available to them crossing the western plains. Lot of fun even in the planning for it.

I like going out to the woods and making camp.

I like hiking through the woods.

I like sitting around a campfire.

I like sleeping in the woods.

I hate waking up in the woods feeling nasty and smelling like stale smoke. First thing in the morning, I want a shower.

Actually, Calvin, I think Dad’s pretty oblivious to your suffering, save as it builds character in you.

That’s, uh, quite a character that’s resulting from the effort…

Calvin’s a complicated little guy…apparently he doesn’t appreciate “the simple life” or “plain old relaxing.” I hope this storyline continues for a few days. Instead of unwinding, Calvin will probably just get all wound up. :-)

when it rains when you go camping (not so bad if you pitched your tent correctly) does someone always have to see if, per some old episode of Leave it to Beaver, touching the tent causes it to leak? Yes it does, at least with the cloth tents we used to use…

oh, and don’t pour gasoline on the fire from a Dixie cup, unless you want to make an ash of yourself…

Grew up camping. Spend exactly one night in a hotel before I was 20. Everything else was tenting, even when we went off to relatives’ weddings. We were rather rain magnets ourselves. Once we went to Colorado, and from the day we got there till we left it rained. Funny thing was, some lady said, “Wow, we’ve been in a drought till this week.”

My wife hates camping. We went out to Montauk once, and it rained every day. That was the end for our camping life. Now I only go with my son’s scout troop.

Calvin, you can do the same things on camping trips that you do at home. And there is more wide open space, too!

“Well, there’s no delaying the inevitable.” Don’t put off until later what you must do anyway, especially if there will be negative consequences for putting it off. It reminds me of a saying. “Let’s get it over/done with.” …with what? Isn’t ‘with’ superfluous?

“…camping on some desolate rock at the end of the earth.” Camping ‘rocks’, Calvin! …well, maybe not for everyone. At least that’s better than camping ‘between Scylla and Charybdis’ (the possible genesis of ‘between a rock and a hard place’), although literally, it’s ‘between a rock and a whirlpool’. “Therefore, whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house/tent upon a rock:” Matthew 7:24

I never have been camping and never will. The closest I will come to camping will be a cabin with running water and electricity. Totally on Calvin’s side.

cdward, There are many Montauks. Are you referring to Montauk State Park in Missouri (since you mentioned camping in Colorado)? Does your wife really hate camping, or rain while you’re camping?

Ah yes, Camping. I was so traumatized by camping in Girl Scouts, that for me, my idea of camping these days is a motel that doesn’t have a hair dryer or mints on the pillows!

If Dad didn’t get ‘wound up’, he wouldn’t have to unwind! “He likes to watch us all suffer.” It helps him unwind! Hobbes won’t be complaining, except maybe to Calvin, privately!

My dad was the hunting editor of Field & Stream magazine, many years ago. At one point we went hunting for some five weeks near Whitehorse, living off the land pretty much. When we returned to civilization and went into the lobby of the hotel to get rooms, we smelled so much of horses and ourselves no one else could stay in the room with us. So much for hot showers…..hahahaha…I miss him very much…

You go, girl! Send the Ekert to meet billdi! billdi would be transformed from a Danae to a Kate. :o) Here’s a great definition of non sequitur. I could wish I had made it up myself. “Any inference that does not follow from the premises; specif., any fallacy resulting from a simple conversion of a universal affirmative proposition or from the transposition of a condition and its consequent.” Anyway, we were at least somewhat in context with the ‘camping’ theme of the cartoon. He just tries to rattle my chain.
