At one point, when my girls were younger, I told them that they had to be in bed by 8:30. Not that I didn’t say go to sleep. If they wanted to read or play quietly for a while, as long as they went to sleep at a decent time, I was OK. They loved that rule & never abused it. (The younger one usually went right to sleep.)
We never had an issue getting our sons to bed. We told them they had to go to bed and stay in bed, but they did not have to go to sleep and they could do whatever they wanted as long as they did it quietly. They were usually asleep in about 15 minutes.
Rosalyn’s already developing the qualities to be a successful mother someday. She can read Calvin’s mind, she has super-hearing, and eyes in the back of her head!
With any luck the basement has a few useful amenities like a 65" big screen TV with a playstation hooked up and a really cool sound system, uhm… never mind.
Son of a gun. I forgot that. Sleeping in a bed is indeed a privilege. Many in the world sleep on the ground or on pads laying on the ground. I don’t think they play Tom-Toms in bed either.
It’s half past five, and it’s been dark for over an hour. The sun set today at 3:24 PM. From May 19th to July 23rd, it doesn’t get dark here at all. So, using darkness as a way of telling if it’s bedtime doesn’t really work in Iceland.

Sometimes Watterson conveys Calvin’s state of mind with a few strokes, but here…that last panel…art!
