As 1 might see from my avatar, I LOVED when Bill Watterson did the spacey landscapes for Calvin’s mental adventures ( ‘cause it’s all in his head, right? ;)
A second look tells me Calvin is truly bored. Not a single living creature or plant in the entire view. Usually he has at least one monster and sometimes one chasing another.
A recurring theme of this strip is that Calvin’s parents are inattentive, mostly unaffectionate, never playful, and give no effort in understanding Calvin’s flight of fantasy.Of course, if they did, the strip wouldn’t be nearly as funny.
It starts pretty funny, and then concludes with a beautiful landscape. Bill Watterson often based his alien landscapes off of southern Utah, with its’ similar strange rock formations.

When you can’t change the people, change the setting. Even imaginary ones are sometimes better.

Dad should make more of an effort to spend time with his son. Then Calvin wouldn’t be so bored and lonely.
