Andy: Peter, I wish you'd stop napping and would help out some. Peter: Don't blame me. It's all the Tryptophan in the turkey I ate. It's like nature's knock-out drug. Andy: That's a good excuse, except Thanksgiving dinner isn't for four more hours. Peter: I'm still digesting last year's Andy: By the way, this year you serve yourself after the rest of us.

I’ve heard of MSG in Chinese food being like a knock-out drug, but never trytophan in turkey.

it isn’t the trytophan that makes people sleepy. it is the massive amount of calories that one consumes in one seating. but, then again, we are society of fatties.

My husband is allergic to tryptophan. Even the smell of cooking turkey closes his airways and makes him violently ill. We always have something else for Thanksgiving. This year we’re thinking about fish.

Mythbusters busted the “tryptophan makes you sleepy” on Sunday’s episode. It’s the overload of calories that makes you sluggish.

Ah, the classic American response to criticism…get defensive, and then go to the other extreme altogether. The idea of finding some happy medium between the two never seems to occur to our adolescent society.

Turkey, chicken, and beef have practically the same amount of tryptophan. (21.9, 20.9, 20.1 g/100g respectively) Cheese is actually higher. It is an amino acid, so is often there with many protein sources. It also exists in chocolate, bananas, and flour.
