Victoria: Well, so far, Joe, you're acing the pre-marriage questionnaire. Joe: Yes! Victoria: But I have to warn you, the next question is sort of a Kobayashi Maru... Joe: Ah, but I don't believe in no-win scenarios! Vitoria: You just lost points for so easily getting that geeky "Star Trek" reference. Joe: Oooh... now that was sneaky.
HabaneroBuck about 15 years ago
She used the ref., then deducted for a MALE who got the reference? Much like everything else in this strip, I’m cryin’ foul. Straight up stupid.
She’s intolerable, and he’s a loser. Who are we supposed to care about here?
WoodEye about 15 years ago
Let’s get on with it!
Kiba65 about 15 years ago
He must be leading her on, or least I hope so..
johnnydoc5 about 15 years ago
That’s not fair! Course I *would not * have gotten it.
kreole about 15 years ago
I hope he’s leading her on too—-if not, she’s got him.
The Duke 1 about 15 years ago
Didn’t want to marry her in the first place!!! :-P
ben_david about 15 years ago
He can only win this test by changing the parameters of the test.
PhantomPlumber about 15 years ago
I’m glad I didn’t get the reference. I would have guessed it was a kind of sushi. Of course, if was a Dr Who reference I’d be sunk… ;-)
Hey Joe-Allen, why do you think Joe and Victoria haven’t dated? The 14 Feb 2008 strip, for instance, certainly looks like they’re on a date to me.
keenanthelibrarian about 15 years ago
I don’t think anyone believes in ‘no-win’ scenarios. Where is this getting her?
pawnraider about 15 years ago
No-win scenarios! Sounds like marriage.
YatInExile about 15 years ago
Walk away, Joe! You don’t need this chick!
Colt9033 about 15 years ago
I agree with Jmd4isu. There more acceptable women who are not out to dismantle who you are. Joe raised his kids, he more than mature enough for some picky woman like Victoria. Anyways, there properly going be nice little war between her and Joe’s daughters if joe survives this stupid pre-test of his.
DolphinGirl78 about 15 years ago
I’m a woman, and I think this test is ridiculous… I truly hope he’s got something up his sleeve…
grinstoya about 15 years ago
Woman… marriage… sneaky…. hmmm. Wiley, I didn’t know you knew my ex.
wittyvegan about 15 years ago
I didn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition. :D
js305 about 15 years ago
Think about it…this is Danae’s test. It sounds like her and she was all for them getting together. I think Victoria will report back to her on this.
Hey, it’s as good as any other predictions here!
halavana about 15 years ago
wittyvegan, NO ONE expects the Spanish Inquisition!!!

From Star Trek to Monty Python in 18 postings. WOW! I am impressed.
GROG Premium Member about 15 years ago
I’m with pawnraider. But even though Joe lost point on that one for knowing the reference, he should have accumulated enough bonus points to cover.
wicky about 15 years ago
Hey Joe, lose the twit!
Allan CB Premium Member about 15 years ago
That’s a low down, no good trick, and she should be ditched immediately or have some ground rules set for her.
Oooooooh those wascally women!
Wildcard24365 about 15 years ago
That question was a “no-win” scenario.
corbetti about 15 years ago
Wiley, ignore those who complain about the star trek reference - I think it was a BRILLIANT twist! Well played on Victoria’s part.
And if it were a Doctor Who reference, he would have lost double points (at least in the US, where Star Trek is definitely more mainstream, unfortunate as that might be).
TheDOCTOR about 15 years ago
PhantomPlumber: Its hard to sneek a reference to Daleks into a conversation ‘cause you often get that stare and total silence-eceptforalonecricketchirp-type response then you have to correct by quickly compareing them to KLINGONS.
jrsearcher about 15 years ago
Joe’s answer would’ve been a WIN in my book!
fredbuhl about 15 years ago
Well, you know, in panel 3 that face she makes looks about as friendly as the average Klingon. Time to beam out.
Dmajor about 15 years ago
He hasn’t spotted the real test yet. The real test is whether he gets up and walks out on this foolishness, showing her he has a spine.
Digital Frog about 15 years ago
Colt9033 - Actually, the daughters are for it - They’ve been trying to fix them up for a long time.

HabaneroBuck…I have only ONE thing to say to that comment…
Amen!
Logicman about 15 years ago
I’m beginning to think this stream of comics is larger on the inside than it is on the outside – at least based on the number of comments here. How’s that, Star Trek, to Monty Python to Dr Who … Oh we are uber geeky now! :)
FresnoDude about 15 years ago
If you go to Wikipedia, Kobayashi Maru, you see that for a win-win, you have the cheat. Maybe she took points away for cheating??? OK, so I am an optimist.
rfleisch1 about 15 years ago
Proving that I have the right wife, she would have asked that question, I would have gotten it right, and she would have awarded BONUS POINTS!
jsprat about 15 years ago
Wiley, brilliant.
I can’t help but wonder how many years of therapy you required to expose your vulnerabilities as a man publicly.
LOL
JanLC about 15 years ago
Not only was the refernce from “The Wrath of Khan”, but last summer’s Star Trek showed Kirk actually doing the cheating and winning that No Win scenario.

Only if marriage is a zero-sum game. However, a true marriage is anything but zero-sum.

Nah, true geekdom is quoting Firesign Theatre.
He’s no fun, he fell right over.
jaiel about 15 years ago
That was an easy one everyone Knows what the Kobyashi Maru is.. next time quote the Wrath of Khan few people can reach back and pull facts about that out. P.S I would have given him 50 points for it.

Ok, the answer is 42.

marvee about 15 years ago
Joe was dating someone (I don’t remember names) & thought it was just friendship. She got tired of waiting and left town. Her cousin came to run her shop and Joe was interested in her for a while (variety is the spice of life, according to men). I think Victoria is the first one. And the girls were in favor of the match.
Varnes about 15 years ago
I’m thinking maybe Jeffry contributed that question to the test. That is Danae’s friend’s name, right?
Wilphart about 15 years ago
Yeah, the Kobayahi Maru was an easy one. But her reaction would have lost HER points on my test. Good nerd girls are hard to find.

You know I think Joe is just humoring her. He seems to be relaxed and amused. I think he’s just waiting for this silliness to be over so he can…..you know…..Guys are extremely tolerant when sex comes into play.
pswhitlark about 15 years ago
I’m a gal and I got it. What’s the problem. It’s when you use a really obscure quote and that person knows the episode, season, year as well as character who said it, to whom, in what situation and what the next line is; then he (or she) should get points deducted for being “geeky”. Just becareful, you might need to a job from that “geek” someday.
FresnoDude about 15 years ago
In the first box: Well, so far, Joe, you’re acing the pre-marriage questionnare and Joe thinks “yes!” So, Joe has made up his mind he wants to get married.

How can you be in two places at once when you’re not anywhere at all?
I’m also impressed Wiley knew how to spell the Watchamacallit Maru.
namenamename about 15 years ago
@Chikuku: I’m all girl and I certainly got the reference. Plus, I would have added points instead of deducting them.
Time for Joe to pull the Picard Maneuver and split.

At the very least the Cochrane deceleration.

Same here. I’m female (I haven’t been a ‘girl’ for a VERY long time) and when I was a kid, my whole family watched the original Star Trek series… and we all went to the first few movies together as well. Star Trek was one of my Mom’s favorite shows.
weasel_monkey about 15 years ago
Wow! A 4 panel strip results in a full page of “ditch that girl, Joe!” (you guys do realise this is a comic, right?) and a page of “it’s life Jim, but not as we know it”. What power you wield with your pen, Wiley! I don’t think there was this much discussion in my English class when we studied Shakespeare. :P
