Re: Pipe Smoking on the Beach.

Rosa Luxembourg was assassinated in 1919, so that canā€™t be her in a circa-1930s photo. The background looks like the White Cliffs of Dover, placing this photo in England. The fashions definitely do not date from her lifetime. Emma Goldman was born around 1870, so she would have been at least sixty in a picture from the Thirties; she was also stout and wore glasses. So this photo has been badly misidentified somewhere along the line.

The dancing dogā€™s name is Tige, pronounced with a hard ā€˜G,ā€™ or, for you linguists out there, with a full glottal stop. Tige was part of the advertising tandem ā€“ with Buster being the full partner ā€“ for Buster Brown shoes. I have heard the jingle, which dates from the early years of the 20th century, but canā€™t bring it to mind at the moment.

    Re: Pipe Smokers

The oldest posting I can find for that photograph is here:

    http://www.ipernity.com/doc/57114/3494176

Itā€™s dated November 2008, and it doesnā€™t identify the women. There are a large number of sites which have the photo labeled as Luxembourg, de Beauvoir and Goldman, so Iā€™m guessing that someone added the names as a prank. (As search terms go, those names are going to be more common than ā€œwomen smoking pipes,ā€ so it probably spread through searches for major historical figures.)

Meanwhile, last week I figured out how to access Flickrā€™s photostreams. They have at least 40,000 Great War pictures on file. My brain glazed over after the first thousand, but I did find quite a few German pictures similar to the Russian soldierā€™s glamour shot. Some of these pictures have soldiers relaxing in the field. Others are posed group pictures, always with two reclining soldiers positioned to either frame a placard or draw attention to the senior officer/noncom present:

So that glamour pose isnā€™t as rare as Iā€™d thought.

You guys are making me feel old. Well, I guess I am, at that ā€“ I remember the Buster Brown jingle well, and loved watching Andy Devine, the Little Rascals, and all of those old black and white shows in the 50ā€™s.Ā I loved Buster Brown as a comic as well ā€“ he was always getting into such trouble, and had such wonderful resolutions at the end, and never seemed to remember any of them. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Teresa.Ā Re: ā€œnaughty bitsā€ ā€“ thereā€™s no worry about embarrassing anyone at this forum, but it is a public place after all, where random kids might happen by, so I thought a certain measure of decorum would be in order. Perhaps I should have said ā€œfiddly bits.ā€
