You get a $1.66 in services for every local tax dollar spent. Privatize it and watch the return disappear. It’s just you see it in small increments called garbage fees and ambulance fees and fee fees. In the north we get to enjoy our winter roads with reduced plowing. i won’t go near our local city unless i have to after dec. hits.
There is no difference between the people of the United States and the government of the United States. …None at all. WE are the government. What part of that don’t idiots understand….?..
to those people who say gov’t out of our lives, what happens when a natural disaster occurs? how about a terrorist strike? or some other calamity? or, when a company poisons our food, drink, and beer? what then? and, when did conservatives become anarchists?
Intelligent libertarians are not anarchists — that’s merely a comic strawman. Libertariarians realize that there are legitimate “inherently governmental” functions, without which you can’t have a civilized society. But they also keep in mind Thoreau’s saying, “That government is best which governs least.” (in his 1849 essay, Civil Disobedience)
Couldn’t they just take the walk/don’t signs down and throw them away? That would be an improvement. Anybody who tried to actually follow those stupid things, instead of actually looking at what the traffic is doing, would get hit in fairly short order. They’re constantly saying “don’t walk” when there’s no traffic or “walk” when there are three cars and a semi heading right for you. Nobody sane pays any attention to them.
Sorry Wiley, in places where traffic signals and stop signs have been completely eliminated the traffic flows smoother and there have been fewer accidents. Except for the sociopathic 10% (lawyers, politicians, and other criminals) people tend to be peaceful and socially cooperative.
gmartin997: In truth government has spoiled this country, picking up the tab for everything the people think they deserve; and it all comes out of the taxpayers’ pockets.you mean like fire departments, police departments, roads that do not have holes big enough to swallow a large bus?
ramcprivate, point taken, but it’s still the people that allow it to happen….Do Americans even know who the Kock brothers are calling all the shots and footing the bill for all conservative causes?
It reminds me of the pharmacy in Massachusetts that cooked up the medication that may have given thousands meningitis.Tell those people we really don’t need all those safety regulations.
The republicans are doing a good job of pretending that they did not drive the over-stimulated bus into the mud. Romney is playing me, too, better as a debating strategy!
Uh, you do realize you completely lose your argument when you start comparing religion in the United States to the extreme violence of Taliban/Al Q. While I think they sometimes go overboard, we have a constitution written that stops them from going too far. As for the idea that any of your opinions (not facts) might disprove God is laughable at best. When people talk about limiting government, they are not talking about eliminating the roads they pay far with taxes. Or schools. Or Defense. But, we could certainly stop wasting money on a lot of stuff. And we could certainly tell government to butt out of what size soda someone drinks. Just like it isn’t the governments right to control a woman’s body, it isn’t their right to control how much soda someone buys or drinks. You can’t have it both ways. Government is getting too powerful. As citizens we certainly need to get it back under control. No one but a fool advocates NO government. But, wanting limited government does not make people evil or hateful.
Comparison to reality. It amazes me that many of those that are pro “choice” when it comes to choosing the size of their soft drink, what food they eat, whether to join a union or donate to the causes IT selects, etc…you know, things that actually matter, think they should be involved in all things Vagina!
You already do – in taxes. I wonder why it is that those who don’t trust private sector to run things well fail to see that there really is no difference between the people in charge in private sector and government sector. There’s a revolving door between government agencies and private sector businesses that is hurting us all.
I think maybe you are taking his statement a bit too far. I do think some limits need to be set. One example would be New York City. Do you actually think it is the “right” of government to limit what size soda someone can sell or buy? That is when things go too far. There are certainly reasonable limitations we can put on our government.
Varnes, the problem is that idiots vote people into office who then proceed to run our lives. Politicians are all about spending money to buy votes. Not doing what’s best for the health of the country.
The stupidity of your Ronald Reagan/Glenn Beck rhetoric never ceases to amaze me. You’ve repeated those thoughts so many times now, that you actually believe them. But you really don’t understand why you believe them.
I guess this strip is poignant because without government telling us what to do and how to behave we’ll revert back to a bunch of ignorant, stupid “animals” without a lick of common sense. Yea, I want limited government so I can zoom around town in my gas guzzling SUV or foreign sports car and pick off pedestrians like fish in a barrel.
Can we cut the Red vs. Blue crap? It’s innane, pointless, and most of us just don’t give a flying --. It’s also as dumb as Red vs. Blue (look it up for yourselves), but not half as entertaining.
Sheeple are too stupid not to have the government in their lives. There ain’t no app to tell that driver, “Oh, the pedestrian has the right of way.” And if one more person says, “I have an app for that,” I’m going to squeeze their necks until their heads explode like a melon! Or worse, I’ll take away their smartphone! Then let’s see how well they navigate life.
“Your statement concerning the effects of removal of traffic signals and stop signs is so far beyond absurdly ridiculous it isn’t even amusing.”
Pulling the signs works under some conditions, but not when the roads are at or near full capacity. There is a stop sign at the end of my road that I routinely roll through, ’cuz I have sufficient visibility to do so safely. It could be removed with no impact on safety.
Simple facts: “Red States” are the ones getting more back from the federal government than they pay in taxes. Point two; if you like “private toll roads”, recognize that paying those tolls around the country is equivalent to paying from $25.70 to $54.90 per gallon for your gas! Yep, that danged $0.18 federal gas tax is really breaking you! (Total gas taxes in my state: $0.46)
Isn’t it ironic that…when the strip is nonpolitical, we call political inciters/intruders trolls; but when the strip is political, we call the inciter an artist? (Just teasing, Wiley, but you know you do this deliberately to give the wackos something to shout about :-)
next time you’re driving your (probable) pickup (without emission controls or seat belts) down an unpaved road using leaded gas, and over a rotting bridge which collapses under you, remember you’re a libertarianDo you think you’ll never get old, or sick, or lose your job, or experience a natural disaster…or any of the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? You’ve been eating inspected food, drinking inspected water, walking on protected and maintained streets …since birth. You (and I) are 100% dependent on govt. Be grateful, and think of Bangla Desh, Somalia, etc.,etc.,ad nauseam..
Sometimes what seems to save money at first blush, really doesn’t. When I was working for the State of Florida in Voc. Rehab., the Powers that Be decided that prostheses (artificial limbs) should be made by the providers who charged the least. So we started using only designated prosthetists instead of the ones we’d been using, after evaluating their work for months or years. You should have SEEN what these clowns came up with! Our clients were walking like Quasimodo. It was completely ridiculous. Finally, even the Powers that Be saw the folly of their ways, and we returned to the previous policy.
Note to the cynics: the stats are stated for Local taxes. local government does not have a national deficit, does not have to support an army and does not have to listen from nearly as many alr heads who can’t read what they write.
Today’s comments demonstrate a vital truth: there are too many things considered to be “facts” that are not facts at all. Facts cannot be contravened or contradicted. People today can choose what “facts” they want to support their view. What shall we call them, since they are not facts? Spin. A true fact would consider all things known and seek a truth inherent and balanced among them all. Any cherry picking would be simply Spin. Lo, how many of you are victims of Spin (also known in days of yore as “fantasy”)! It bodes ill for our future…
Getting government out of our lives would INCLUDE not wasting money on a stupid sign that tells you to do what you’d be inclined to do anyway. It’s like bottles of bleach that have labels saying “not for human consumption”. D’uh.
Get used to risk, just for being born, you’re already on death row.
