Gunther: "Is Quill, um... 'here'?" Luann: "No. Want me to get him?" Delta and Bernice: "NO." Rosa: "Hey, who's up for the New Year's party at the bowling alley?" Luann and Gunther: "Party?" Gunther: "I don't...uh... parties make me.... um.." Luann: "Quill and I have plans"

Gunther has a tough time at parties – Typical for Aspergers.

I love Delta and Bernice’s emphatic “NO” to Luann’s suggestion to call Quill.
Ottodesu almost 12 years ago
I find the dialog a bit jumbly. I thought they were simultaneously questioning and saying no to the idea of a party.

I really can’t deal with more than six people at a time; can’t hear myself think.

Gunther is just doing his usual shy thing. Luann, however, is definitely ducking any return to the bowling alley. Delta and Bernice have had enough of digital Quill; they’ll go with Rosa and the bumbling but eventually compliant Gunther. Luann will have her phone-date.

Gunther wants to avoid Rosa…. hmmmmmm…. and he’s not really too thrilled about the idea that Quill might be there…..Something tells me that Gunth really DOES still care for Luann (Not that I’m surprised)

So at midnight will Gunther and Rosa…?

Rosa and T. J. would be a good couple!

My goodness people you sure like diagnosing Gunther with things… Just because a person is introverted and uncomfortable at parties does not mean he has a psychological condition. Just because Rosa makes him nervous does not make him Gay. All his issues can be explained by the fact that people are different. Just because you like big groups doesn’t mean people who don’t have Asperger syndrome. Just because you were a Casanova with the ladies and was never nervous around the opposite sex (liar) doesn’t mean people who are nervous (even cripplingly so) are Gay.

Hey G-Man!
Pay CLOSE attention to that word “NO” in panel two. You’ll be hearing that WORD a LOT after You are MARRIED…,

All you ‘regulars’ in the comment section are like club members… You all seem to know (and mostly like) each other and make reading the comics strips much more fun. Thanks, and a Happy New Year to you all.

Poor Gunther. It’s not a party of strangers we’re talking about. He’ll be with his friends.

“Quill and I have plans”…gotta be a kick celebrating New Year’s from opposite sides of the International Date Line.

Tired of the L-word and her Q plans

@drewderI agree with your comments, with one exception. Aspergers Syndrome is not a psychological condition, it’s neurological, as are all autism spectrum disorders. I know it sounds nit-picky, but I just wanted to clarify.

Luann is very annoying with her Quill talk. If he was still in town she would have ditched her friends for him. They would probably prefer it, though, over the digital Quill, and having to hear about him ad nauseum!
Guilty Bystander almost 12 years ago
Maybe the bowling “party” will end up just being Rosa and Gunther (which could be Rosa’s plan, since they did seem to connect at some level the last time they were at the alleys).
BTW, am I the only person who is disinterested in Bernice as a character? I haven’t been reading this strip daily like some here, although I’ve glanced at it over the years, but it seems like she’s the most negative person among the regulars. At least I can’t recall her being positive about anything since I started following “Luann” more closely a few months ago.
swami mommy almost 12 years ago
At least we had a few short days sans Quill.

I think Delta and Bernice’s “NO” were in response to Luann’s “Want me to get him?” in reply to Gunther’s question whether Quill was still digitally present and not to Rosa’s question. Greg drew a confusing panel.

First, Happy Kwanzaa to Delta and everyone else who celebrates the seven values! http://www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org/faq.shtml*Second, per yesterday’s comment, the G-man certainly IS dressing better. A good woman can do that for a man. Soon he’ll be a twin to TJ (perhaps his positive twin brother)*Third, a couple days ago someone asked if I had an “in” with the author. After fretting & fussing how to tell the full truth, let me say— No, never met him. He wouldn’t know me from Adam in a crowd. Yet (see next msg)

But yes, we apparently are both members of the same secret society— Mature Adults (anyone 18+ can qualify). To a Mature Adult, there are no "they’s), only “we’s”. So “They should fill the potholes” becomes “We should fill the potholes.” “They should get new science books for 3rd graders” becomes “We should buy new science books for 3rd graders.”*Most notedly here, “They should keep this a clean site” becomes “We try to keep this a clean site, fun for everyone in the family.”*Want to join?

Sorry to stir the kettle but Aspergers Syndrome may not exist. It may be an example of high functional autism. I think Gunther is one of the most complex characters in the strip and because of this it leads to all sorts of conjecture. If I were to give Gunther a diagnosis, I’d say he is portrayed as having a broad spectrum anxiety disorder and borderline social phobia.
kenhense almost 12 years ago
If the condition persists – and if the person wants more intimacy in their life – it is arguably a disorder. It can be a dificult call to determine if major attempts to change will really help.

Gunther wanted to talk to Quill to get his advice.

“Dave53 said, 44 minutes ago@Night-Gaunt49I guess these days it’s not enough to be shy and inexperienced …you have to have a “disorder”.”-I think it’s called “being young”…!:ºJ

I can understand why Delta and Bernise get fed up with Luann’s constant blabbing about Quill. I’d like to see Bernise get a guy, it would be interesting.

Yep, it’s not unusual to have a mosaic of personality disorders. I wouldn’t describe Gunther as being autistic in this strip at all. How about this? He is intelligent, introverted and questions his masculinity. Probably hates gym class. All this is a bit too close to home for me. Guess that’s why I dropped out of high school. Hopefully Gunther and his real world kin will fare better, accept their faults and build on their abilities. This is where teachers can help immensely.

I hope Evans finds a new subject soon. This Quill thread is dull as ditchwater.

just kiss her, gunther. then, you will find out the a much ado about nothing. one kiss becomes more kisses.

Bernice stopped being a character here long ago. She is only a sarcastic voice..She and Delta have both had very serious infatuations. AND when considerably younger than Luann is now..Sour grapes.
imbaldeagle almost 12 years ago
Time for Leslie Knox to reappear. That will help Gunther and Rosa grow closer. Maybe his manner will even wake up Bernice. Forget Luann; she’s enamored with an image – they’re easiest to love, because they’re not around to remind you how human they are.
Mikeyj almost 12 years ago
I know exactly what you mean, to this day I can’t talk to women, been alone forever & destined to end my days the same way, I’m afraid
alviebird almost 12 years ago
I suspect we are a lot alike. The worst part is that many others think that, because we don’t care for company, we don’t care about people. That we are cold and unfeeling.
baileydean almost 12 years ago
… “It has been pointed out that Gunther was born left handed but his parents made him a right hander. (Same thing happened to me.) He found out it could cause all kinds of problems psychologically. It could explain some of his proclivities.”-What IS it with parents who do this? Mine did the same… I have no idea why, and didn’t have a clue about the rest of it..Sheesh!

I guess I’d just like to see more from Bernice than sarcasms. I haven’t been following this strip long enough to have seen her in any other persona…too oung to be that bitter. I DO remember Zane when I was reading the papers and occasionally looked over the funny pages, but didn’t know there was a connection with her. He always seemed older than the rest of the ensemble.
Delta can be smart-alecky too, but she interacts well enough with Knute to show a softer side.

I simply CANNOT get over how much Gunther reminds me of Rick Astley.
