Cathy’s mom’s comments aside, if Cathy and Irving are both selling their houses (assuming they are not losing money on them), they should be able to get a decent house with both of their salaries. I agree with GretchensMom where they don’t need a huge mansion with just the 2 of them and 2 dogs. So that should leave them with some money left over to actually save some money. Or not… this is Cathy of course. ;-).I bought my first house for just under 100K and it was tiny, but sold if for twice as much, which helped us buy a nicer second house. The house I live in now cost $100 K…25 years ago. We have put quite a bit of money into it, but it certainly suits our needs.

My parents bought a 10 room, 2 bath house with a basement & attic in 1966 for $17000.
