I suppose the ‘mash potatoes’ generation are the boomers still working taking care of their kids and grand kids who aren’t working because there are to many old people still working.

Haha, so true! And on top of that, I don’t feel like Cathy is caring for her parents yet. If anything, her mom still cares for her. Also, I don’t think Sandwich Generation only applies to Baby Boomers, but when this comic was published 11 years ago, I guess it was accurate.

Hello Cathy friends! Happy Friday! The big news in our house is that Lil made her (future) high school varsity volleyball team, and she’s only in 8th grade! So excited for her! Have a great day, all!

The Sandwich Generation is a new one on me. I never heard of this idea before, or the words to describe it. Is it a real thing?

I just happened to watch a rerun of Dr. Phil on OWN yesterday and one part of the show covered a woman who was working, had children in the home and was caring for her elderly parent at the same time. She was a wee bit overwhelmed and in desperate need of help.

My parents were “sandwich generation” before there was such a thing, grandma lived with us from the time they got married.

Not only was Cathy initially wrong about being part of the “Sandwich Generation” (which her father was right to call her out on), but she’s wrong about being part of the “Open-faced Sandwich Generation” too (which I had to do a Google search on as I have heard of the first one, but not the second one).

According to seniorliving.org, the “Open-faced Sandwich Gener-ation” are people described as “anyone who’s non-professionally involved in elder care” ….. which Cathy isn’t, as she doesn’t have anyone except herself, husband, and two dogs to tend to (as opposed to having children, grandchildren, elderly parents and/or grandparents that she’s actually, physically, taking care of as well — which then puts her into what is called the “Club Sandwich Gener-ation”). (And no. I’m NOT kidding. That’s a real “generational term” for those of you who, like me, have never heard of that one either!)

She may spend a lot of time with her elderly parents — especially her crazy nut-job of a mother. But currently she doesn’t actually “care” for either one of them as they’re not really all that elderly to begin with and, at this point in time, are MORE than capable of living in their own home (not with her, nor her with them) and caring for themselves as well as each other without any real help of any kind needed from her whatsoever. But, you know. This is Cathy we’re talking about so ….. !

Maybe Cathy and her mom should just go to a deli to discuss the whole “sandwich generation” thing. The term is new to me, too.

And, hey—while they’re there, maybe they could order sandwiches with nuts. Because, y’know … nut-jobs and all. [smile]

HI, MOM. Happy Friday, “Cathy” Clan.
