And in this insane, zero-tolerance world we live in, a kid who put out a “SUICIDE DRINK” placard today would be whisked off by child services in eleven seconds flat. (sighs) I hate to admit that I miss the 80s.
Amazing – not one frame showing a videogame. I can walk around town today and not see a single kid out doing the things that made summer special for my generation.
just you wait calvin. when you get older, the summer days get longer, but one has responsibilities. work(8-12 hours per day), family, clean the house, mow the lawn, fix something, etc…
I’m in Georgia – I have no kids but can imagine how frustrating it would be for them to see all the tv shows/comic strips running now featuring vacation road trips.
This was always one of my favorites. Each little vignette perfectly captures a moment which is instantly recognizable without words. Well done, Mr. Watterson!
My favorite memory of sneaking out on my parents was when we had gone camping with my BFF and we(friend & I) had our own tent. We went & looked at a hotel across the TCH and it had a pool and a canteen that we snuck into and got hold of some chocolate bars. We thought of going swimming , but then we would’ve needed new pj’s and towels, so we ditched that idea. If I was a thinker like Hobbes’ is, I’m sure it could’ve been done without my parents finding out. Oh to be young again with all the knowledge we have now. Who knows what trouble we’d find ourselves in eh?

Time flies when you’re having fun, Calvin. Perhaps you’ll notice the diff when Mom takes you to the doctor and dentist for pre-enrollment checkups….

Is that Calvinball they’re playing at the right end of the second row? :)

This is the way we used to spend our summers. Now it seems my nephews spend it watching TV or playing games on the Internet. Sad times.

It sure appears as though they accomplished a lot today.

Love this! Nineteen panels of gorgeous artwork that shows childhood before hand-held games.

It is surprising that he isn ’t courageous enough to grab that snake and carry it around his neck … or let Mom find it in his pocket.
