We never did the duck and cover drills in school, but then how close would a nuke have come to northern VT.The radiation would have gotten us later..\\//_
we had them alot when I was in elementary school, but I lived in a town with a SAC base and it was considered a potential target. Also the duck and cover was used for tornado drills, lol
Not only did we have the school drills, but , we would be in town and when the air raid sirens went off we would have to leave our cars and go to the emergency shelters located in the basements of some of our stores.
In elementary school we were sent to the “Bomb Shelter” that had radiation signs on the walls leading to it. I never could figure out how we would not be hurt by just going to the basement.
And I was in Baltimore….just down the road from D.C. We did them quite regularly as well. Into the hallway, against the walls on either side, head between our knees with hands over our heads. And had there been an actual attack, that is how the archaeologists would have found us in about 500 years….still sitting in that exact position.

Even as a kid, I knew hiding under your desk or in the hallway wouldn’t save you.
