Danae: Happy mud season!! Looks like making it a national holiday might be harder than I thought. Lucy: Maybe you could do it like President's Day and combine it with Easter.
Oh. My. Godā¦ that takes me back to 1956. I was 4 and my brother was three. New house, back yard not seeded yet. it rained and we had a mud ball fight when the sun came out.
My mom was so madā¦ she hosed us down and discovered we had lost our shorts and underwear from the weight of the sticky heavy mud. She had to sort through the back yard to find out clothesā¦ andā¦ when dad got home from work he howled with laughter as she told him about her day and then spanked us both. Iāll never forget thatā¦ ever.
By the way, that was the best mud I was ever inā¦ Iām 61 now and my Father is 92, Iām going to remind him of this he will love it. :)
Every time I see Danae and her horse (donāt know its name), I keep thinking sheās supposed to the the inheritor of the āCalvin and Hobbesā legacy.
For crying out loud, itās not mud season yet! The ground is still frozen! Wiley was being optimistic about us having an early spring up here, ayuh. Itās no wonder that the critter down in Pennsylvania has a death sentence over his head.
AHHHHHH; mud !! Growing up (Iām 69 now) in my little 800-people town in the ā50ās centered around The Pond behind a dam in the center of the village. Weād spend entire days at, on and in the pond. The mud on the shallow side was ~5" deep, black, really fine silt. Getting hit in the face with a handful of THAT smelly goop was not a good thing !! SPLAT & SPLORT sum it up quite well !!
What is mudā¦.Ohhhhā¦I remember now Harry Mud (original Star Trek seriesā¦.they stuck him with several clones of his original wife who drove him mad anyway. And the answer is yes I am old almost a half century old!
Mud day sounds great to me. Way, waaaayyyy back my best friend and I got into mud, had a great time, then hosed ourselves off and went in for a change of clothes. Moms werenāt that happy but since we cleaned up ourselvesā¦. still donāt understand what the problem is. As long as there is no permanent damage let the kids play.
Every other cartoonist Iāve seen do this joke draws the child naked. But Wiley runs a remarkably (ahem) ācleanā strip in that area. Iām fairly positive however that he did draw Jeffrey naked once when he was in Danaeās presence.
Reminds me of the time when the Canal was dredged when I was a kid. Smelly god-awful stuff. Loaded with bottles , an occasional ice skate, and other what-nots. Best time ever discovering all that stuff. I still remember the smell to this day.
Family story, only it didnāt involve mud, but something that looked like mud to me, a 3-ish boy making āmud piesāvery close to cows, if you get the driftā¦ When they found me, I was covered with āmudā and I dimly remember the yelling and the resultant pails of water, the stripping and THEN the bath. Ahh, farm life.
Maine Mud Season or New England Mud Season was the bane of every parent and joy of every kid, when I grew up.I remember the joys of getting absolutely soaked in mud, slogging home as it crustily dried, the horrified shouts and admonitions of my mother as I appeared darkly at the back door. What joy for a boy ! But then came the inevitable stripping down on the back porch and being hauled upstairs to that , joy cleansing bath.
āI never really thought about the fact that the girl in this strip has a pet horse small enough to fit in the bathtub with her, before, but now it suddenly seems ridiculous.ā
@wrwallaceiiWhen I was about 11, they drained a small shallow pond behind the house of a friend a few blocks away, leaving about a two or three foot base of smooth, slick, fine-grained mud. He and I and several other guys had to check it out, of course, and minor fooling around the edges eventually degenerated into everyone stripping down to shorts and underwear (it was summer) and spending the day doing everything we could imagine in and across a few acres of cool mud.
We had a better outcome than you, thankfully. His mom let us hose off & take showers while she washed our clothes before we went home.
I donāt know that Iāve ever had another day of such pure unbridled fun.
I have a 3-month-old RAV4 and I love it!! But no mud here in Darkest Saskatchewan; weāre still cleanng up from the blizzard that occurred lWednesday, Thursday and into Friday. Several freight and a couple of passenger trains were stuck; on freight train was in 12 feet of snow on the flat prairieā¦ and today the middle son took some of the snow off our roof to prevent it melting and creating an even bigger ice dam. :(

My 2 memorable mud adventures are too long to relate here. Both involved motor vehicles and Springtime in Montana . . .
