Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for March 31, 2013
Transcript:
Kate: I've decided that I don't want to watch or read the news anymore, Daddy... Joe: Really, Kate? I thought you liked staying informed. Kate: Maybe I'm getting too informed. I'm beginning to believe that there's not one decent person in government who's capable of telling the truth. Ok, this is the part where you reassure me by saying the news gives us a skewed impression by focusing on the corruption and lying, and that the majority of politicians are good, honest, altruistic people. Or you could lie to me... Joe: The news give us a skewed impression by focusing on the corruption and lying...

Having spent a lot of my life as a newspaper reporter and editor, Iâll say what I always tell people: itâs in the news because itâs unusual. If it were commonplace, it wouldnât be news.

I love Kateâs side of Wileyâs ego, We donât see it enoughâŠI love Kate!
Varnes almost 12 years ago
Hey, she DOES like being informed, why do you think sheâs tired of the ânewsâ..Information is not their forteââŠ.

I know Iâd be much happier if I were completely ignorant of whatâs going on in the world.

Negative news is a ploy by the mainstream media to make everyone feel bad about themselves. The more negative news printed, the worse people feel. The worse they feel, the easier it is to âlead them to the promised landâ with all the political BS on âhow much better things will beâ is we elect the âsaviorsâ of the world (those backed by the media, of course â who continue the subversion).
Now please donât tell I overheard Danae saying the above â she will try to sue me for stealing her lines.

Will Rogers said that if you donât read the papers you are uninformed and if you do read the papers you are misinformed. It seems to apply even more to modern media ânewsâ.

Yeah, sure, Omnius. All the democrats are honest and all the conservatives are corruptâŠ..in your fevered mind.
We live in a swamp and the news media is just as corrupt as the two major parties and the citizenry as a whole. Someone once said âdonât believe anything you read and only half of what you see.â In todayâs world of photoshop and special effects films I would amend that to donât believe anything you havenât experienced yourself.

I think there was one decent person in government, but they were fired for nonconformaity . . . â»
dennis17 almost 12 years ago
Not ONE? Not even THE ONE? Wiley was definitely in a bad mood when he drew this. I believe there are good people in government, but the majority, no. That said, deal making is the only way things get done, including the few things that we actually want done. âFine words butter no parsnips.â

One of Kateâs problems is that she is WATCHING the news. TV is a horrible way of keeping informed. It is slick, shallow, and biased. I cannot think of a ânews personalityâ on mainstream, cable, or public TV whose reportage I would accept at face value. The written word is much better, even in electronic form. Understand your sourceâs biases and shortcomings, and apply the appropriate filters. Kate would know all that, but a newspaper or laptop would be a less effective set up for her complaint.

The shame on us is allowing the majority news media & Hollywood tell us how to vote!

Is Kateâs problem that even Republicans now call themselves the Stupid Party? That their complaint is that their members tell the truth about how corrupt and nasty they are, and the rest of us have been noticing, so the solution is to lie more?
lakita_lover almost 12 years ago
This is exactly why I avoid the news too. hugs Kate

Wiley, you just summed up my entire view of the news, government, and explained nicely why I never watch the news. Now I have to get this strip on a T-shirt so people will finally understand why Iâm so bitterly cynical. Even in ignorance I feel no better; just less worse about things.

Sorry, the democrats are just as sleazy and corrupt as the republicans..They are all politicians after all.
susan.e.a.c almost 12 years ago
When I worked for a newspaper, a TV, it was hard to get any level of politician to tell the truth. They know what they wanted and only told the truth when they felt no one could stop them, no matter left or right. Either way, when they told the truth was the most scary part of the job, because if they really got their way⊠hooray for procedural rules that always interfered with them!!

Then there is Foxâ newsâ that is not news at all, but a propaganda arm of GOP.

Wiley is having a bad day. I wish for him- joy when others are generous. I read a story about a person returning a lost possession. There are good people and good things do happen, Wiley.

Just stop watching or reading the ânewsâ and youâll be a much happier, peaceful person and youâll sleep better.

Russell Peters has a really good bit on how the news media gives us a really skewed impression of other countries. For example, the impression many of us have of Middle Easterners are raving fanatics who go around blowing things up, because thatâs all we see in the news. We donât see everyday scenes of people going shopping, taking their kids to the park, etc., because thatâs not newsworthy.

If only good news was reported then would there be complaints of misleading people since there is evil and bad things that happen in a fallen world.
