I remember when I was 8, we invited one of my “friends” for dinner. He called his mom, not to ask if he could eat over, but to find out what they were having over there, and decided that he’d rather eat at home. Needless to say, he didn’t play at my house any more.

we used to do that with my mom and dad. Just wait until dad went to take his Sunday nap and ask him if we could go somewhere, he would say if it is ok with mom, (anything to get us to go away so he could go to sleep), then we go say dad said it was ok if we go/do whatever………..not sure if we were actually getting away with something or not. I am sure my mom knew the trick.

My mother certainly knew the trick :-) In our house, it was hard to get a straight answer, because neither of my parents would risk contradicting the other.

I led a dull childhood! lol!

My father planted a large winter garden of greens and invited one and all to come and gather all they wanted. Some appreciated. Some were jealous. We also shared the pears, peaches, plums, chestnuts, blueberries, any catfish we caught fishing on the Suwanee. And yet the children of some we fed vandalized our property out of jealousy, thinking we were rich because we planted and tended fruit trees rather than buy junk cars, beer and cigarettes. To each his own.

A friend of my wife’s cured a mooching neighbor by letting the dog lick the plates clean before putting them back in the cupboard. She never came back. Just cost an extra big load in the dishwasher.

We just said, “So and so is staying for dinner.” We never asked unless a ride was required.

Ah, a rare off-page “appearance” of one of Bernice’s parents. :-)
