The irony is that the very people who will make this political are the very ones depicted in the comic.

Maybe we should limit the amount of power government has if people cannot be trusted with automatic fire or large clips. You know, just to limit the damage they can do themselves.

Since December, thirty states have passed laws that will make voting more cumbersome than it has been. In NC, out of state parents of children attending NC colleges will be required to pay an addition fee(sounds like a form of poll tax) if their children want to vote from their college address. Other laws make absentee voting harder and/or shorten the amount of time in which absentee votes can be receivied. Other new laws reduce the days in which people can vote in advance as well as restrictions on who can register new voters, There is now an effort being made in at least four states to repeal the 17th amendment which gives Americans to directly elect their Senators. The legislatures of those states want to give the responsibility of electing Senators to state legislatures. With the gerrymandering and redistricting(red mapping) and other nefarious actions being taken, this seems a threat to Americans ability to have a voice in their gov’t. We have a hard enough time being heard now.It is easy to understand why majorities might want to create super majorities – it worked for Hugo Chavez – it is not the way to run a truly Democratic Nation.We need a centrist gov’t in order to be the United States. We should not allow either side to turn us against our neighbors, and we should be Nine Issue Voters and vote for the greater good. That IS in our best interest.Respectfully,C.

Democrat vs Republican is presented to the American public as an either/or choice. Unfortunately, neither party is fit to govern America. This is what is meant by voting against your own self interest.

It started with the cartoon. Make a political cartoon, stupid and wrong thought it may be, and you get a political response. Then some ignorant poster says the rich don’t pay taxes. Heck, the rich pay MOST of the taxes. Its the guys in the cartoon that don’t pay any. All take and no pay.

So does Mr. Miller like to throwing gas on the fire just to watch the reaction? It’s going to be an ugly day NonSequitur Comments Land..

Yep ‘cause ALL the right-wingers are fat white slobs livin’ in a trailer with a pickup in the yard…Yeesh.It really is so much better that our government is willing to make up our minds for us, think for us, be our dietician, be our wet-nurse, tell us when to procreate, when to terminate, when to retire, when to become soylent green, when to whine, when to be outraged. I am happy not being a person, making it on my own and gaining some sense of self-satisfaction.

At least the anti-abortion has some logical consistency, though I feel it’s based on an illogical premise. The sexual-preference issue, though, should get more sympathy; these people obviously have a birth defect that renders them unable to reproduce, which is the sort of thing I would expect religious people to pity.

the toon is spot on. i love the Calvinist who think bad things only happen to bad and lazy people. they are like Ayn Rand who bitched about the horror of the government programs but lined right up to get her entitlement. why anyone listens to that hypocrite is beyond me.. all the folks who got their homes wrecked by Sandy last fall weren’t telling the government to get lost and more worried about the deficit than their houses but complaining the government wasn’t acting fast enough.

I assume that the couple does vote democrat. Otherwise the strip doesn’t make any sense.

Of course its political. Just when were people give any rights to determine their own interests? What audacity, imagine being able to decide such things as without it being inherited. Who do we think we are?

This reminds me of how many people in Ozark County, MO live. Only Republicans are elected except for one county commissioner. Almost all in the county are white, right wing Christians. This is where the CSA (The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord) had their stronghold back in the 70’s to 80’s. It’s not uncommon to hear an hour of shooting, some automatic.

Kudos to all the discussants. Evidence for what divides our great country. But here we are – in spite of our differences – trying to make it work. And so it goes…

If it is all the republicans fault I wonder how there came to be so many rich democrats?

I’m sure that when everyone notices that poverty has been eliminated in places that only vote Democrat, the rest of the country will quit voting for self reliance.

Meanwhile, in reality, the top income earners pay the vast overwhelming majority of taxes. Don’t let little details like “reality” get in the way of some perfectly good class bigotry, though.

Say, wasn’t there a whole thing in the last election, about how people like this were being “disenfranchised” because they tend to vote Democrat? I guess it’s whatever you need it to be based on the moment, eh?

As to “perpetual poverty”, that is the result of minimum wage laws that destroy jobs for lower skilled workers, which were actually created to force black workers out of jobs, and the welfare state that rewards irresponsibility and laziness.

Talk about nailing it on the head…

And yes, that is the way to stay poor. Vote for the biggest handout, or for other short term gains like unsupportable minimum wages, and you will perpetuate poverty. It may be good for your short term self-interest, but it is bad for you and the rest of the country long term.

Somebody did a cartoon about 5 years ago that had a trailer with two young kids playing outside.The mother stuck her head out of the trailer door and shouted,“Levitra, Cialis, dinner is ready!”

This should be the Oklahoma,Arkansas,Texas,etc. state cartoons and/or slogans.

I’m pretty secure, too, also no kids. I always go out of my way to vote for school millages (among other things).

Besides, you wanna get your share (or a little extra) of all that free stuff…

Wiley, you do have my sympathies. Even though I am a rural-American and a fiscal conservative, so I should be insulted by this one, I do understand that we’re about the only ones left to target. We saw how many papers refused to print your cartoon that might have offended a certain religion, and it would be the same if you actually portrayed the real situations with poverty, violence or the overall economy. Intolerant leftward editors wouldn’t print it, and if they did they would be buried in hate from intolerant leftward readers, then targeted by the organized national pressure groups like OfA. So ya gotta do what ya gotta do, and in 21st century America that means slam conservatives, whites, and/or flyover country, or be banished to rightward internet sites, or be silenced.

I just read through most of the comments and the right wing, willfully stupid people I live among just make me sick! You’ve wrecked the country. Keep your guns, hate, selfishness, meanness, backward view, support for the plutocrat, worship of big oil, big.pharma, big business, Fox News propaganda, brain dead Republicans, fear of everything, racism, destroy nature, and Any Rand, and shove it all up your self-lothing ass! I’m moving out of the country and enjoy watching you Neo-Huns from the north destroy the place. I’ve always wondered how the USA would end its place of greatness and hope in the world and now I know.

Why do you people even read the comics if they piss you off that much?

Ignorance = poverty = angst = homophobia = gun worship = political conservatism. Frustratingly, the cycle tends to replicate itself since children of ignorant parents tend to remain ignorant themselves. Breaking the cycle requires exposure to extraordinary teachers somewhere along the way, but those are few few and far between.

Commenters can’t even agree to the politics of the couple in the cartoon. Hilarious!

As i’ve said before, elsewhere; I’m glad UK politics doesn’t arouse such arguments as US politics. We’ve learned to put up with the cr*p we get from government.

@They aren’t democrats. We all know marginalized families: unemployed, underemployed, working two (or three) minimum wage jobs to make the overheads … who are rabid TPers, who are certain the Dems are stealing their future. These people are marginally literate at best, and are sure Fox’s talking heads are telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I know people who run small businesses, which are not being supported by the GOP, but believe that because the GOP is ‘for business’, that they won’t be marginalized when their huge, subsidized mega corporations swallow them whole.

Essentially, the bottom line is education, and there are a few people here who might be willing to take the time to view some very interesting interviews on the subject of American Education.

There are actually a dozen or so of these; different people have uploaded them in different chunks. It is worth a thinking person’s time to run them all down though; they are real eye openers. The whole interview is posted.

The bottom line is educaton. It’s gone so far now that it is not easy to see where we could find instructors for teachers. In the last thirty-five years, as I raised and homeschooled my daughter, I have seen some truly appalling things come out of grade schools.

It’s bad enough when they are simply not teaching children, but I have seen arithmetic papers (2 digits) MIScorrected (way to keep kids enthusiastic about math, eh?) Grammar, spelling and syntax – forget it. All the ‘English’ papers I was shown were positively riddled with every kind of error you can think of – all uncorrected.The way to literacy is to correct every grammar, spelling and factual error on the spot.

Special interests do NOT belong in the schools either, and I include political issues in that category. When a friend’s son was in fourth grade, he was assigned an essay on the issues of the Nicaragua affair, which was, I think winding down around then. (mid eighties?) Since Nicaragua was a US fiasco, you may be sure that is not what the schools were teaching. They aren’t rewriting history; they are inventing it from whole cloth. It’s not only government, though, corporate interests, NPOs … they’ve all got their fingers in ‘education’. We have arrived at the place where ‘education’ in this country is just about pure indoctrination.

Some of you will remember the essay contest which was conducted to select a grade school teacher for the Challenger ride. The Oregonian published a group of those essays, in a (brief) fit of concern over literacy levels in the country. Those essays, gleaned from all parts of the country, were no better than their, say, fourth grade students. Yes, I mean the teacher’s essays. Those were teachers who were employed to teach your children and mine. No, there was no huge scandal, hardly anyone seemed to notice.

That’s been a long time ago now, and I have seen no reason to think that anything has improved education wise. It appears to have been steadily deteriorating ever since, and no sign of a turn around.

Putting education right in this country looks like being the most difficult challenge of all, but there seems little motivation for it, with the exception of those on a few forums on the comic pages this last week or two. It’s late in the day, but never too late to make a start. Without a functional education system, we can kiss liberty and democracy goodbye.

Oh, sorry. We already have. We really DO have our work cut out for us.

I see too many who are deeply prejudiced, perhaps deeply disturbed. Both sides of this forum are taking poor people and raking them over the coals because they are poor and ignorant. None of you, who are doing this, have any empathy left. Wait until someone in your family, through circumstances beyond their control, are left with no options. Well, many of the poor you criticise are just such as these. They were laid off, injured or otherwise dropped from the mainstream. Many were people who thirty years ago came out of high school and took a decent job and built a life. They voted for whom they would and things looked good in America. It didn’t matter where they were from or what race they were or religion. We worked together and kept opinions to ourselves. Now, these undertrained individuals are needy and don’t know which way to turn. They far outnumber the, so called, underclass of welfare recipients. They simply want to get back to where they can take care of their families and have their own little patch to live on. I see many of the Left and the Right sneer at these people. I also know many of these people and they are not stupid, nor are they incapable of critical thinking. They may not be able to express their thoughts eloquently but they do express them. Perhaps all you geniuses need to learn how to listen critically. That’s why Romney lost. He forgot that the poor, underpaid and under-employed are still people and American citizens. And the left is just as guilty, painting all the white poor as ignorant, unwashed and too stupid to see how superior the average Democrat is. Both sides of this argument, you need to take a long look at yourselves and find a way to include all people in this Country we all claim to love.

I hope a cable from that satellite dish goes to the outhouse…I’ll just beam most of these comments into there!

This is crazy. Someone takes a job hanging car doors in an automotive plant. They are paid the big bucks so that they won’t try to move up the ladder and so that they will be back next season to do the same job. The company only wants you to do that, nothing else.You work for 18 years, building seniority and getting put on the day shift. The layoffs aren’t as bad since you are older, and suddenly, they announce a plant closure – you get offered a job at another place, but now your house isn’t worth anything and you have to start over. Now, everyone says, “why didn’t you go to school and learn how to flip burgers?” or drive a taxi or work a Walmart -all part time?

If our country is to survive, we must be able to build all the things we need as well as raise and grow all the food we need. If it takes protectionism, so be it. We should also require American shipping for a certain percentage of imports and not allow Truckers from other countries to operate on our highways with vehicles that are not built to the same standards as ours are. We also have to create zones that allow for a streamlined environmental impact reports – so that a small percentage of the public can not close a project down.
