Nancy by Olivia Jaimes for April 25, 2013
Transcript:
It was Miss Fritzi who first unofficially adopted Nancy's new friend- and Rollo Sr paid for heat, water and power at the old house! He also had his security team patrol there! Fritzi and friends pretended he was on his own while stocking Sluggo's pantry bit by bit while he was at school! Said uncle More, the whole community took care of him! How did you both do on that test? The neighborhood gave Sluggo odd jobs to do for pocket money! Of course that burns a hole right through a young boy's pocket! For my girl! Today, I'm a rich guy!

Hopefully, Rollo, Sr. also thought about buying the lot where Sluggo’s house stands, so that no one could ever run Sluggo out of his “home.” Very interesting way to resolve the “mystery of Sluggo.”

1. If only real world children (and some adults) had some help like this in their different situations…..
2. Love how Fritzi was sure to include Sluggo in asking about the test…. even though Sluggo wasn’t exactly “her own”, she and the others made sure that Sluggo wasn’t neglected, and made sure he wasn’t “on his own”, and helped him feel independent, as he probably viewed himself, at the same time…

One last thing: maybe now people can not only see why she didn’t officialy adopt Sluggo, and can also see that this way, he and Nancy can continue to have a “crush” on each other….

Don’t want to hijack the comments, but today’s strip really keeps reminding me of Isaiah 65: 21-24, where there will be no worries about acquiring basic essentials, which I am confident will be for all and soon…. and I’m saying this just because I am reminded of this….

Sluggo is rich, indeed.

You’re right, it is unusual, but in Baltimore City, where I was born, it is very common. You may own the house, but someone else may own the land and you’ll have to pay “ground rent” annually as part of your escrow. You can request at financing to buy the ground and it must be sold to you, but many don’t do it.

Sluggo doesn’t notice that his pantry slowly fills up with food he didn’t buy??

He’s a kid. Kids don’t always realize how the whole concept works. Wither that, or he is aware of what everyone is doing for him, so he studies hard and works hard to make everyone proud of him.

interesting – a complete re-write of sluggo’s character. often change is better, but i wonder why all this is necessary. it fills panels i guess… i preferred the mystery

While I read Nancy on Sundays, for some reason I didn’t on the weekdays (probably due to the other 50 comics I read and pesky things like “real life” ;-)). But today I came here and this story is fascinating!! You have a new/old (I used to read Nancy daily as a kid) fan here, Mr. Gilchrist!!

So this is how a young child is allowed to live alone in apparent abject poverty. It’s still a good ways from being credible. If the community was so empathetic, why didn’t they simply find him a nice loving family to adopt him? Hmmm…. because we wouldn’t have to suspend disbelief.

There is a Gospel here that could fill volumes. If the Good people of the world would truly live that Gospel, there would be no need for public assistance. I could Simply Write this as a christian, but i realize that there are similar thoughts among other faiths and belief systems. Sluggo represents those who have not. Nancy, Fritzi, Les&More and others are the haves. His aunt is those who shirked responsibility.Amazing to see the love showered on one and he does appreciate it and returns that love the only way he knows how.Yep, Enjoy the ride, folks. Keep on driving Guy!now I’m contemplatying writing a commentary, but I need more background.

$200 to cross the country by rail. Even in 1965, $106.60 bought a ticket from: Quincy, Ill – Chicago – Twin Cities – Winnipeg- Vancouver – Seattle – back to Chicago and Quincy, On the Zephyrs, Mainstreeter, Canadian, Empire Builder and California Zephyr.Oops- forgot meals. A couple trips to the diner would account for the balance!

Which Pacific? There were the Northern Pacific, Western Pacific, Southern Pacific (No Eastern Pacific) Missouri Pacific, Union Pacific and Central Pacific – before the mergers!

“JayeBlue, this does not explain that to me AT ALL. Why couldn’t Fritzi adopt Sluggo if she wanted to???”^^See yesterday’s (Wednesday’s) and Tuesday’s strips. Fritzi herself explains……
