I had a pair of suspenders that fastened to the belt with little plastic clips. Dumbest thing I ever bought. The problem with buttoned suspenders is simply finding them. Suspenders of any kind are hard to find, buttoned ones are damn near impossible.

I actually have suspenders that fasten to the belt. That way I have the best of both worlds.
