I wouldn’t be surprised if Michael were to run away from home at any moment. His dad meant his quip in fun but it was really insensitive given that he already knows Michael is worried sick about the trip. Why don’t they buy a ticket for Ellie’s brother and have him escort Michael on the plane? I never did this to any of my kids…..just threatened to sell them.
Mike’s old enough to travel by himself and get rid of his insecurities by taking the trip. I’ll bet when he gets back, he cant wait for the next time he can go somewhere unaccompanied. Having Phil babysit him on the flight would be totally counterproductive.
Whether or not he takes it seriously depends on how sensitive he is and if he’s aware his dad is joking. My parents said this kind of thing all the time, but we knew it was just silliness, so there was no harm in it.
I used to tell my children that if they didn’t behave I would go find the Gypsies that buy children. They knew it was an empty threat. They told me so.
My Dad used to tell my brother and me that when we finally left home, they were going to move and not tell us where they went. Well, we finally grew up and left home and they did move, but darned if they didn’t tell us where they were.:^)
I don’t get why there is so much hatred for Elly and John. It is a comic strip, yet there is so much truth to it. If any one of you critical folks were perfect parents, then my hat is off to ya! As for my family, my dad would’ve said something like that and I never once doubted his love for me. My mom once tried to trade her first-born for a stapler at work…it’s almost a family joke. I have three teenage boys, for crying out loud. I get frustrated, they know it, and they also know I would die for them in a heartbeat. EASE UP, folks. If you don’t like it, no one is forcing you to read it. =)
When did this country get SOOOOO sensitive. Watch some of the “older movies” , note when they were made, and really see what I mean. Blazing Saddles, The Karate Kid (all of them), The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, The Red Skelton Show (TV), Carol Burnett Show (TV). Can’t say certain words because they offend someone (THEY ARE JUST WORDS), must not say anything bullying (THEY ARE JUST WORDS). “Sticks and stones can hurt me but words never will”. Anyone ever heard of this?

My father made many similar quips while I was growing up. Heck, he still makes those sort of comments.

People tell me, “your daughters (9 & 13) are soooo adorable”and I say, “yeah, you don’t live with them”.

The point of Jon’s comment isn’t that he’s making a joke, it’s the stupidity of the the ticket agent’s question.
