Hmmmm maybe a trip to the local hospital’s cancer ward would be more effective….or a pseudo IV with cancer drugs …or a trip to the morgue. If only my dad had quit when we kids had encouraged him to do so. Emphysema claimed him and that was even long before the tobacco industry strengthened the potency of their product.

Phil needs to quit torturing everyone else and take responsibility for his own health by seeing a doctor and getting help.

At least he has a sense of humor about it! Sometimes that’s all that gets you through the rough times.

Right. And playing in the street doesn’t guarantee getting run over by a bus, either. And driving drunk doesn’t guarantee you’ll kill a car full of kids, either. So should we say it’s fine to do that too?

Hate to rain on your parade, but my dog died of cancer, & she never smoked at all! People are getting cancer, because of all the above ground atomic & H bomb testing. As well as Chernobyl. Our ground & water supply has a nice layer of radioactive material. Which is known to cause cancer. Cross your ,fingers! You’re guaranteed to die of Something! Allow each person to make their own decisions!

So many smokers are in denial that there is no significant health problem. What are the stats? Nearly 400,000 per year in the US die due to smoking related diseases? Wake up and smell the roses before you are pushing them. Folks being selfish about their well documented bad habits ignore the loved ones they leave behind, smokers and helmetless cyclists to name two groups.

You are right. E-cigs haven’t been out very long. But if you go back and read yesterday’s strip, that’s not an e-cig. It is a plastic stick painted to look like a cigarette. They never worked very well because of the nicotine addiction factor. They were designed to give the quitting smoker something to do with their hands.

Yes, and my grandfather was a 1 – 2 pack a day smoker for more than 70 years. He died at age 92 of an aortic aneurysm, probably not smoke-related. My father, on the other hand, quit smoking when he was 33 and died of lung cancer when he was 86. Go figure.

Uncle Phil used to be kinda cool. This storyline just makes him annoying.

My dad’s grandfather said he would give my dad a pocket watch if he didn’t smoke until he was 21. Well, my dad didn’t smoke till he was 21, and got his watch. You might be able to guess the rest. Dad made up for lost time, and became a two-packs-a-day smoker. He died at 59 from a blood clot that had made its way to his heart. This was likely exacerbated by the smoking. My friend, whom I have mentioned earlier, was a heavy smoker and died at age 62 after being on oxygen for a few years. Her mom lived to be 92.

GBP; good point. Lynn Johnston probably failed to realize that marijuana is 1500% more potent than tobacco. More to the point, like many others it is hard to face up to one’s own addictions, easy to laugh at other’s addictions. Come to think of it, what would Lynn Johnston have said if she caught one of her kids doing drugs? She would have no choice but to condone it or else it would be hypocritical.
