The artist began as a tailor but could never get the fit right. After the umpteenth complaint; “these pants are too loose, Lautrec,” he quit and became a painter.
Click-to-enlarge image can be found here, or at Mr. Melcher’s blog entry. At the Café La Mie is shown, with a different coloration, click-to-enlarge image, and described, by its current-location page (along with 7 yet different coloration, click-to-enlarge, detail images: shown here, here, here, here, here, here, and here).Although he did spend time in France, Chaplin was maybe 2 when it was painted, 10 years before Lucy was born.Another different coloration, maybe-click-to-enlarge image, can be found here, along with a more detailed description, and titled After the Meal.Correcting the (current) typo, this calls it The Last Crumbs; so, there are probably other titles. The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection (many more under Subcategories at each level).Third, of the 4 works, by this artist, that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here.
I had partially written a comment and was searching for a photo to link in another tab, when this tab closed for no apparent reason.
Lautrec often painted in the Moulin Rouge and I think this was a client (and it does look like Chaplin) but his companion looks very much like La Goulue who the artist featured on his posters. I prefer to remember this other redhead. I never cared for Lucy who married a Cuban and (unlike me) never learned Spanish.
Another work by this artist can be found here. The current-location has moved things around: image, detail images shown here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
