Yeah, but only because sheās heard this song-and-dance routine before: āMy problem is boys. My other problem is boys. And boys, boys, and boys.ā But this time, Luann is actually seeking out help for something other than the opposite sex.
JayBluE over 11 years ago
In the beginning of the strip, Lu would āwalk right intoā a trap, with what she said, when Brad would āzingā her, using what she said, which set it up so well, in the first placeā¦ I guess since then, itās expanded to include almost everyoneā¦. I see that Greg is still favoring this gagā¦.

I agree. I just donāt find much to like about Bernice.

I guess my first surprise was that Luann was getting paid for that library job. I thought it was a volunteer kind of thing.^^It has been both at different timesā¦. it was a paying job when Luann bought her car, then, her car disappeared and it was a volunteer jobā¦ now Lu has a car again, soā¦ā¦ā¦.

I love Gregās work , but, his continuity is sometimes a bit sketchy 9_9 < rolls eyes

I thought Luann started out volunteering @the library with the kids, reading storiesto them in appropriate costume for storiesbeing read. Gunther did incredibly goodcostumes for her. Then came the day they hiredher. So entered the car into her life. Andnow we have cycled back, to the beginning.Does this also mean The Gunther is gone (from thelibrary, too?too?

Iām guessing Luann will let Bernieās snark sail right past her as she buckles down to moaning about her need for help finding a new job at a time when money is becoming more important (with college in prospect, she needs to save as much as she can).

Bern, you donāt kick someone when theyāre down!
seismic-2 Premium Member over 11 years ago
From the two outfits we see her wearing today, we see that Quillās Boomerang has been tossed and didnāt come back. Maybe this is a sign that she will spend the next few story arcs worrying not about boys but about money. Since the economy of Pitt seems to be centered on Weenie World, you would think that would be the default employer, but as others have expressed, we may see Luann driving TJās lunch wagon instead. I truly hope not, because the less we see TJ in this strip, the better.

So much for Bernice showing her human side. She should be hugging Luann.
TORAD_07 over 11 years ago
EXCUSE MEā¦ That was a volunteer job. When did it go paid? Anyone know?
Perhaps, she was referring to the funding for the program itself. Iām sure there were other costs, besides Luā āpotential salary.ā

Miss Haaaallllper connected with the job market? Placing all these teens in nice little jobs and doing psychoanalysis? And in a 7-12 school with paper records. Riiiigggghhhhtt as BC once said. This encounter is the result of a nice little plot device, so thatās fine. But let me know when teens go to school to get jobs ā like schools have the time, staff, and money to do that.

What happened to the QUILL going to school in the USA storyline? He was going to live with Gunther and his family, remember?
Argy.Bargy2 over 11 years ago
Not everyone who needs a job to help pay for future community college or whatever can afford to wait until summer. In Florida, there are thousands of high school kids bagging groceries at Publix and Winn-Dixie to earn money during the school year.
Argy.Bargy2 over 11 years ago
I was starting to like Bernice when she showed sympathy for the scared freshman. But now that sheās showing her contempt for Luann, I realize I made a mistake in thinking that Bernice had a compassionate side. And Iām sorry to see that Luann turned to her for help. Luann should have been able to turn to Miss Phelps. Itās unlikely that a student counselor intern would be allowed, or able, to provide help in finding a job. Go back to helping freshmen find their lockers, Bernice.

Not true. Luann has also griped to her about how plain-looking she is and how sheād like to look like one of those impossibly beautiful, stick-thin models in her fashion magazines.

Sounds about right to me all the Obama money has run out and so the library has to cut back since all it really is is a place for homeless people to hang out during the day

Serious Q: Should you go to an adviser who has never herself/himself encountered the problem? Bernice seems never to have looked for a job. Is she qualified to advise Luann?*Serious Q Corollaries: Can you be a substance abuse counselor if you arenāt an ex-addict? A marriage counselor if youāve never married? A correctional counselor if youāve never done time?*Or are these all just āhumanā problems that any competent counselor should be able to handle?
The Old Wolf over 11 years ago
It was a snarky comment, but typical Bern. And Luann knows that, because sheās heard thousands of them in her bedroom before. Iām hoping Bernice steps up to the plate and uses what skills she has to help her longtime best friend.

So Luann didnāt even try to look, she just assumed she couldnāt get a job and ran asking for help???
JayBluE over 11 years ago
Exactly! And they do that sort of thing on the news, celebrity āshowsā and sports media, all the time, the piecing together what they want others to see, or what it seems others would more readily perceiveā¦ ā And also, weāre reading words from two dimensional charactersā¦ And Greg favors using this gag a lot, but it doesnāt mean that itās only meant from sarcasm or elitismā¦. itās just Greg setting up the joke, just as he did since the early days (which are now running as āLuann Againnā, here on GoComics, where thereās further reference for people to see this, as Lu has always made an opening for others to make a quick joke, only because she phrases things the way that she does. Itās the way that Greg prefers, and as he usually states, his characters come from a part of his personalityā¦). And as Ken and some others have mentioned, best friends and even siblings may āripā on each other, but itās only in certain moments, and you know theyāre just āteasingā, whether male or female. When it comes down to it, real friends and siblings may joke and tease, but always are there for the person, when it really matters!

Who says Berniceās, āI knowā, has to be sarcastic?
Bernice is Luannās best friend. She knows Luann better than anyone else. She is also more up to date on Luannās problems than anyone else. So if Luann has a problem, would you not expect Bernice to be the very first person to know about it?
Is it not feasible that Bernice has already heard through the counselorās grapevine that the library is cutting back on all part-time positions? She would immediately know the impact that would have on her closest friend, Luann.
So what better thing for Bernice to say when Luann comes to her with her problem than a gentle, āI knowā?

I agree with youā¦vocational training in high schools should be reinstated. They are not available in this area, and so those who want to work for a living doing jobs that are essential for the community have to attend classes at the local community college. Itās sad it costs so much money to do soā¦ ;)

I didnāt think high school guidance counselors acted as employment agencies. Donāt students get after-school jobs by reading āhelp wanted adsā on bulletin boards (physical or on-line), by searching Internet postings, or even by going into fast-food chains and other service outlets and asking whether theyāre hiring?
seismic-2 Premium Member over 11 years ago
As for where Quill is, he will be graduating from high school in Oz shortly before Christmas on account of the academic calendar there. so he is either (1) spending all his time applying to colleges, or (2) writing term papers and studying like mad for finals in order to graduate, or (3) enjoying āsenioritisā by drinking Fosterās all night and passing out. But yeah, the ādingoā hypothesis canāt be ruled out, either.
